I have a 2016 4Runner and wondering how much frame and body protection does a rear bumper / ride carrier provide?

Even just a receiver hitch will add quite a bit of protection to the back of a rig but a full bumper goes a lot further. The aftermarket bumpers for the 4Runner wrap around the sides of the rig and keep a lot of sheet metal safe. They are expensive, but a whole lot cheaper than a replacement plastic bumper and the associated bodywork. The rear frame isnt anything to worry about unless you are really pushing the rig hard in the rocks.

Southern style has one but they stop production on it for now... I would really like a rear bumper with a ladder and spare tire gate for my 15 runner.

CBI makes a good rear bumper for our rigs. I am also going to be speaking with C4 Fabrication when I pick up my sliders about doing a rear bumper and possibly producing one if it works out.

Some makes of rear bumpers provide better departure angles. If you go with a tire carrier even better to get your tire out from under the rig. Side protection for our rigs and aftermarket bumpers I'd argue is negligible.
