Pull out Drawers and kitchen Sliders

I did a poor job documenting,
But here are a few photos of my drawer system in the back of my FJ Cruiser.

Unfortunately I couldn't afford any of the high end systems like Goose Gear or Truck Vault so I decided to do my own project. This was inspired by an existing design made by DRIFTA Drawers out of Australia.

It is two very spacious drawers on 28" full extension sliders (100lb capacity each)
Also on top are two flush mounted pull outs.

Pull out on the left is to accommodate my cooking area , I will be using a Blackstone Table Top Grill - 17 Inch Portable Gas Griddle. It is supported also on 28" .. 100lb sliders.

Pull out on the right will serve as my fridge storage area. It is also on a 28" slider but will accommodate 200lbs.

I have not added the tie down anchors on top of these slideouts but I will be doing so to ensure the fridge and cooking surfaces dont move around.

I will be painting all interior areas of the drawers with black paint and all exterior with black truck/bedliner spray.
I most likely will add a small LED light inside of the drawers. Rear of the box will be anchored to the frame of the vehicle with bolts.

I am not a professional but I hope this serves me well.

I am open to any suggestions that might make this project even better.

I will be adding more photos later as I near completion.

What type of tie down anchors are you planning to use for the top?

I'm considering using the Airline-Style Angled L-Track and a few ring fittings for the top of mine, Mounted to the top of the cabinet with T-nuts from the inside. Have you found anything better?

Those look great, man. I like the joinery you used. Overall clean and functional design, too.

Though I wonder why most like to paint or linex their cabinets instead of letting that nice wood show? Minwax makes a really nice polycrylic that goes on easy, looks great for ages, and wears like iron. Wipes clean with a damp rag.

Are you going to use the tops of the two upper pull-outs as work surfaces, and store flat goods like a grill, towels, etc in the shallow space underneath?

The size and depth of the lower drawers seem perfect.

edit: Ohh, I see, one is for a fridge, the other for cooking. Had to re-read your post carefully to catch that. Same Q, though, you'll use the space underneath then, for kitchen flat stuff?

Bed liner hides a LOT of flaws. Painting in general allows you to get a way using much less expensive materials and still keep the final result looking professional. At least that is why I was considering it for my build. Currently it's got a coat of Spar Urethane that is used for boats, but If I decide I can't take looking at my mistakes it'll get bedlined.

Oh yes, I understand that and have painted and varnished and stained tons of my own projects and those of others over the years. Made a living at it, actually, cabinet work and painting. Both @FJBruiser's wood and assembly skills look great in this project. Nothing quite as pretty as good blond wood done right.

Bed liner is also a pain to clean and doesn't take much to look dirty or dingy, in my experience. There's times I wish the interior of my trailer bed was not linex-ed.

I plan on using the Stanley turnbuckle eye bolt kind. Here is a picture of one as an example31RLUVLIbNL._SY400_.jpg

Agreed on both points.

I find a quick cleaning of my rhino lined truck bed with a tablespoon of Tide in about a quart of water gets it clean and back to looking good in just a few mins.

Yeah I plan on using a velcro pad underneath to hold a flat pouch that can hold knives, and other flat utensils, at least that's the idea

I understand what you mean and you are right, but I also was hoping to match the interior color and somewhat conceal the box in case any thiefs look through my tinted windows and get an idea to break into the box.

Looks really good.
Question on the fridge slide, in particular, how do you plan on locking it into the closed position so that it doesn't slide around whilst driving?
Sorry if I missed it.

They have a built in friction lock. It is very strong but if that fails I will most likely add a latch

So it's done!!!
I have finished painting and covering it with bedliner.

Inside of the drawers I lined with rubber liner ( I purchased thick rubber doormats) and cut them down to size.

In case people are wondering the interior dimensions of the drawers are 26"long x 17 3/4 wide.

This is more than enough for me. Total cost of the project was just under 300bucks. Much cheaper than $1000-1500 that retailers are asking for.

Once again this build was inspired by DRIFTA drawer system from Australia. It was the most practical for me. Once again I am open to any comments or input for possible changes or modifications.

That looks great. I've been thinking about doing these for my land cruiser. Thanks for the ideas and inspiration.

Man it was a process for me since I am working full time, a full time student in a graduate program, a full time dad with 2 small kids. But I can honestly tell you it was therapeutic. So just put down whatever you are doing and just start a piece by piece! And measure 5 times before you start!
