Hey folks, so I am very new to the whole Overlanding thing and I have been having a hard time planning routes. I live in central PA near Harrisburg and there are a ton of really good hiking trails around me but I haven't been able to find many vehicle trails. I got the gaia gps app because it was recommended by people on this site but even still I am having a hard time finding driving trails ( At least ones that are open to the public to drive on.)

Are there any tips or tricks to find vehicle trails in central PA? Also, I heard you can share route in Gaia so maybe someone will have an example of a well planned route.

Purple Lizard Maps (check the online blog) have PA guides. I'm planning a trip to Bald Eagle Forest end of Feb and planning a good long route.

Bald eagle definitely looks cool. My wife had family out in the Laural Highlands so I may try to plan a trip out there some time as well.

Welcome to Overland Bound @DBAR!

Gaia is very easy to import routes into, make your own, and also share. The best way to learn it is to simply play around with it. Heres a thread with actual routes in Bald Eagle State Forest you can download.

BESF is one of my favorite places to visit but the closest place to the Burg would be Michaux. That would be the cluster of routes in the attached image from my Gaia.

Forest roads are plentiful in Pa but legal ’trails’ on public land are much less common. Not to mention that our state flower could be a road gate. Purple Lizard maps are great but typically I would drive to an area and simply explore. Something to keep in mind that one of the best time to explore in Pennsyltucky is September to December/January since that’s when DCNR opens a bunch of road gates.

Please feel free to reach out if ever have any questions and welcome again!
