I’m a big fan of BBQ. Of course I didn’t use the search function. Sorry everyone. Yet, I’m curious to those that set up camp for a few days as to what you are using for a compact or functional smoker? Maybe a portable PitBoss running off a jackery? I’m currently shopping.

Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett. Works great on 12V - doesn't pull much once running. I've done 12 hour cooks on it and solar kept the batteries charged +.

Has anyone used the traeger ranger grill, for $450 and the dedicated space it needs is it worth it?

I've been using the Traeger portable pellet grill for years. Pull's 12amps during startup. Once the fire is lit, pulls less than 5amps. Minimal impact on battery. Multiple ways to use the grill. Smoker as intended, Or crank it up to 4oo degrees and grill a steak, or put a disposable pan in and use it as a oven. There are plenty of these types of grills. Pick the one you like and take it with you.

I've been using a Country Smokers portable for a few years now... I bought it as a cheaper alternative to the Traeger portable, and its been good. It doesn't have a 12v option, but my truck is a hybrid with 7.2kW of power, so no worries there. It looks very similar to the pit boss mentioned above; I would bet the pit boss is the next gen from the same factory, as the chasis are identical, but the electronics are older on the Country Smoker:

Amazon knock-off:

I also considered the green mountain one for its 12v capability, as my brother has one and loves it, but it wouldn't fit into the storage hatch on my ex's trailer.

One of the upsides of the smaller lower profile ones with the high temp settings, is a small 13 in STEEL pizza 'stone' fits in them and makes great pizza too (my stone one exploded from heating too quickly in it, get the steel version)!
