Hey guys, I'm planning a trip for the beginning of November. I have nine days for holiday and would like to do a trip down the Oregon coast, cut across around the Rouge River, head to Crater Lake, up to Bend and then to Mount Hood. We'd like to camp almost the whole trip. We most likely will be getting a hotel in Bend. Any tips or suggestions?

Yay....great trip planned and I can definitely help with your stay in Bend if you're interested. Airbnb owned by friends in Sun River on private property owned by overlanders. It's the Aspen Room owned by Jonathan and Jennifer. Pet friendly and a great place to recharge. Minutes from river and 20 minutes from Mt. Bachelor. Tell them Chad and Marie sent you. We will be in the area about 10 min. From them and love to meet up. Getting ready to move there as we speak.

Lots to do around Bend. Check out the lava tubes-there’s one under the highway between Sunriver & Bend but also some backcountry ones.

Another unique spot to stay in Bend is McMenamins’ Old St. Francis School. Probably best without kids (& dogs)-which is why we don’t go there any more. Check out the pool.

BTW, saw your Okanagon post-don’t discount what you can do in a stock T4R. You wouldn’t believe what I’ve done in a stockish ‘02 Pathfinder & my Mom’s 5th Gen T4R is AMAZING out of the box. Tires are likely your most important upgrade. Probably KO2s given all the driving you’ve been doing. You can even basically +1 them even without a lift. I would also get some cheap recovery boards, like the X-Bulls for <$70. Those 2 things can take you almost anywhere. Have fun!

+1 for Lava Tubes, super cool spot.
The Newberry Volcanic National Monument is cool too. Great spot to check out, if your taking HWY 97 from Crater Lake to Bend. Weather/Season permitting.. you can drive to the top of Paulina Peak, which has killer views

Personally I'd modify that southern most part of the loop to route you down into/near Gold Beach, that section of the 101 is one of my favorite sections of road in north america. There are also lots of wonderful dispersed camping sites that are free to stay in within the park.

Agree, love Gold Beach. Also consider driving the road along the Rogue River through the Siskyous.

Depending on your time, it’s not that far to drop down to Avenue of the Giants, Jebediah SP in CA & Eureka-all greats.

When we lived in PDX we would always do an October loop over to Bend, Down to Avenue of the Giants/etc. up through Eureka & Gold Beach. Great trip. Don’t forget Oregon Caves NM & Ashland, OR

Thanks for the recommendation on the Airbnb, unfortunately they are booked up for all of November. :(

We will definitely let you know where we are staying. We are bringing our fuzzy kids with us as well so it would have been a great place to stay!

We've already done the Avenue of the Giants and most of Northern California. Trying to stay in OR for this trip.

That sounds like fun. I hadn't heard about Paulina Peak before. I will check it out. Adding the Newberry Volcanic National Monument as well.

Yeah probably won't be able to hit McMenamins this time around since we are bringing the dogs. But I will save that for a trip we take without them.

Yeah I'm looking into getting new tires for the T4R soon. It's a great rig and I've done a few snow runs with the standard tires and was fine.

Oh they’re certainly okay. We plan to wear ours down a bit before replacing. Particularly as my Mom drives it back & forth between KC & Seattle several times s year. I’ve done UT, Northern AZ & some of the dry Cascades in the stock tires & really, the clearance & base drivetrain (to say nothing of ATRAC & a locker on the off-road) are REALLY good.

Honestly, I’m jealous of people starting out today who can just go buy such a reasonable vehicle & have it be so good off the shelf. Most of the things people do to their rigs are really only incremental improvements given the quality of the base product.

Good luck with your trip, I live a few miles east of Gold hill, OR. When ever I go to Crater lake I always make two stops one at Phills frosty in Shady cove for ice cream and the natural land bridge( just north of Prospect on Hwy 62),it is always interesting to see.

I have made acouple of trips up the coast on my Motorcycle when going to see my parents in Aberdeen, Wa. Lots of little places to stop to look around but never had the chance to stop and camp along the 101.

There's some great camping right around Coos Bay on BLM land either in the woods or on the water, or the Elliot State Forest. Let me know if you plan on stopping anywhere near Coos Bay, I can can PM you the coords of the good spots. We're in Coos Bay and planning a trip on ORBDR Route 6, then ORBDR Route 3 to Crater Lake and back. If you don't go all the way down to the Rogue River you can take the ORBDR from Coos Bay all the way to Crater Lake. If you are around Crater Lake, Umpqua hot springs are legit.
