I was wondering how many OB members currently have an oil catch can installed in their rig and what has been your overall experience with having one installed. I'm not a mechanic but the idea behind having one makes total sense to me. I currently own a '19 4runner that I plan to run into the ground so any item that can add some additional longevity to the engine seems like a no-brainer. What say you?

They absolutely make sense. Once you install one it’ll amaze you at the amount of crud it’ll collect. I replace the plug on the bottom with a barbed fitting and hose that runs somewhere convenient underneath so that when I change the oil it’s easy to drain the can.

Thank you for the info, Wawa! Do you mind sharing where you got your catch can? Tons of options out there at different price points but they all seem to be relatively similar designs.

They make sense for some motors, less sense for others, and absolutely no sense for others still. I’ve run them on my turbo cars, My bmws basically have a great one equipped from the factory if it’s kept in working order. On the rover I’m happy if I can keep the PCV recirc flowing well so the oil leaks less. :)

Well... anything is better than nothing but whatever you do do not install one with a breather. Plenty of people have no idea how the PCV system even works but what’s important is that it’s a balanced and sealed system. The price range you typically see is usually indicative of the name brand and the baffles used. Despite what someone might see DO NOT purchase a cheap can and put steel wool in it. Even a completely empty can will catch stuff and make sure you keep it drained. Especially in the winter since it’ll capture more due to condensation. Some engines will ultimately make more use of one and modification to the intake can impact the balance as well. If you’re someone who uses engine back pressure a lot you are likely to see an increase as well.

I‘m sure the last custom setup I made used a can that is likely no longer out there.
