Hello, everyone. I am new here and live in northwest/ central Arkansas. My two boys and I will be going on our first overland trip and wondering if there are any good places to go and set up camp in northwest and north central Arkansa? Is there membership from the area that could help me out.

Thanks,
TJ

we go up there a good bit, but havent found much boondocking...

we stay at the redding recreation area just east of Cass on the Mulberry River. its pretty remote and has a heated bath house and is pay on site $13. the mulberry river is nice and you can canoe in it. jasper is a cool area and the buffalo river is there and has good canoeing and kayaking. there is steel creek between ponca and jasper and there is tent camping there and trailer camping only if you have horses, but the tent area is nice and right on the buffalo river. if you happen to be in jasper...you have to get a burger at ozark cafe. its a life changing experience :grinning:

we did find some boondocking around marble falls, but it was very remote and the road was pretty washboard and there wasnt much to see there. i think staying at redding or steel creek will be good for a first time and redding has the heated bath house, so thats nice if youre not set up for showering yet.

Thank you so much for the advice and recommendations. It surely does help a lot. I am really excited to take my two steps sons, out on their first trip, first camping trip ever, lol. We plan on doing a trip every month. This spring was thinking about going up to the Badlands in South Dakota. How often do you go out?

we're retired so we try to get 4-5 good trips in a year. we did yellowstone last fall and ended the trip with the badlands. we stayed outside of deadwood for a week and went all over. sturgis was interesting to see, but deadwood was way better. interesting little town with a lot of history and some good places to eat and shop. the badlands were interesting...we didnt go down into them, but drove all around the area. the entrance to the badlands isnt too far from Wall, SD which has the worlds biggest drug store. kind of an interesting tourist thing to see since its just right there. we did drive all over and saw mt rushmore and about a half hour or so from rushmore is a monument being built for crazy horse. that was worth driving to see. there are a lot of nice roads to go sightseeing on and custer state park is really nice to drive thru. we took a backroad from spearfish to cheyenne crossing and it was very scenic.

the badlands are neat, but you can pretty much see all of them you want in a few hours. the black hills national forest is where we spent most of our time.
