Hi all, Just joined, had 4X4's for most of my life, just got me a new 4Runner Venture last summer so we are using it for starting out and about. But just got into overlanding in the last year or so. We have ATV's and a RZR which we used for most of the offroading. So technicaly we have been doing a different type of overlanding for decades all over the rocky mt west and rest of US. We are mid 60's and like going on the back roads and trails to relax and enjoy the scenery from the mountains in Colorado to the central desert of the San Rafael Swell or on the the West desert in Utah, no rock crawling , at least yet.

Welcome guys. My first destination this past summer was Canon City and Temple Canyon Park. Couple of days camping and exploring the area. Very pretty. Hope I can make it back out again at some point.

Yep, we go over there regularly. Where are you in Carolina? I'm originally from Myrtle Beach, born and raised. Joined the Air Force after High School and traveled the world as active duty then DOD civilian for over 40 years total. Just retired in 2019.

You gotta ck out the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Lake city. South Park and Creede have some good trails also. We were in South Park for a week in late Sept.

If you need tips for Colorado or Utah just ask. We travel both alot..

I live in the mid-state now but have lived all over. Upstate, Low Country. Made it to Gunnison and went up Granite Creek. I should have gotten acclimated to altitude. I ended up going through Schofield Pass. I won't do that again! Nearly deaded up there! I guess I am an expert now?
My favorite area was up on the Frying Pan River. Never seen trout like that before!

Yep, if you are hiking, you MUST acclimate, even doing the high country in vehicles you can get some MEAN headaches from altitude. We found that out when we moved here in 2008.
You wouldn't believe the size of the brookies near Lake city. State record was broke twice this year. Last one was over 8 1/2 lbs. I never knew a brookie got that big. I chased them a lot while living in upstate NY and Upper Peninsula of Michigan when the Walleye and Salmon weren't biting:laughing:

Viagra, who knew? Makes sense though. About 8K I was good after a while. 10K+ not so good. I saw about the records broken. I got lost, kind of the theme of my trip to see if I could get slightly off the path, and found this beautiful little lake near Encampment with some great dispersed sites and lots of brookies. I ate good!
