Have a question. Trying to fugure how if what we were told is true. My son is getting a 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro4X. He saw the CBI Frontier build and loved it. He wants to start modifying immeadiately after driving off lot. Should he do that or wait till the breakin period and mileage is done? I assume simple mods like rock slider, roof rack, off road tire are good, does size of OR tires matter on new vehicle? What about adding weight like a cbi bumper, winch and lights, which may mean upgrade on suspension. Basically the question is, mod now or wait a while. If now is OK what mods could you do now and which to wait on? Hope I am explaining this well?

You may want to take a few day trips off road with it, see what the stock capabilities are and evaluate what you need vs nice to have. The only problem with upgrading immediately is you may come to find you don't want or need XYZ part. Other than that, there's no break in period required (other than the possibility of voiding the warranty). If this isn't your/his first rodeo and you know what you need, I'd put as much as I can afford on right out of the box :sunglasses:

The only thing I'd do now is look at the standard tyres and if they're not AT, change them (ideally as part of the purchase). You can drive a Frontier to Tutoyaktuk or Tierra de Fuego (shipping across the Darién of course) with no other modifications, so wait until he's put a few months on the vehicle before changing anything else.

PS: "break in period"?

@SoCoRuss Just drive it for a few months to figure out what needs doing.

Then and I know this hard, it is hard for me at 65, start slow. While he drives it and figures out what he might need have him create a spreadsheet or other list of mods and then research them figure out :

Cost
What else needs to may need to be adjusted
Read reviews is it the best piece of kit for his needs
BIG ONE does it void his warranty

The start simply forget bumpers and winches go with tires, and suspension if required for the tire choice. If he plans on a winch, bumper, and other stuff have an actual real off-road suspension place give him an idea of what is needed.

Once you have the tires and suspension sort the rest is "easy"

Tires now
Safety soon
Suspension (now you can redo tires)
Gears because of the now oversized tires.
bumpers
winch
Suspension again because of bumpers and winch.
Up grade electrical system
Lights somewhere in between
RTT and awning. (may have to mod suspension again)
Misc gear in there too.
Somewhere in here you voided the factory warranty but, who cares we look cool.

First time out, myself and a few of my friends pull up in stock vehicles with a tire and shock upgrade and go everywhere he can go.

X3. Tires and safety then drive it for a bit.

Tires now - yes
Safety soon - what's needed more than you have - I assume you carry a first aid kit and fire extinguisher already.
Suspension (now you can redo tires) - only if you plan to overload the vehicle or rally it, you can go more or less anywhere with the standard suspension.
Gears because of the now oversized tires - which you didn't need
Bumpers - Frontiers have bumpers as standard don't they?
Winch - could be a useful option, mainly to haul others out of trouble, although on most occasions you can do this with a cable/strop.
Suspension again because of bumpers and winch - no need for bumpers (you already have them) and winches don’t weigh much.
Upgrade electrical system - for what?
Lights somewhere in between - Frontiers have lights already I suspect.
RTT and awning. (may have to mod suspension again) - as long as it’s a sensible RTT and awning you should be within standard GVM.
Misc gear in there too - yes misc is always useful.

Offered somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as is the previous post.

Yea, I get it. I told him to get it in writing that the mods wont void warranty.

Through my experience, I've learned to first purchase parts that are paramount like tires, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, etc. OR parts that can you can take with you if you learn this vehicle isn't what you actually need after a year or so. Such as, a portable air compressor, RTT, winch, GPS, recovery gear, etc.

I've seen too many people on here and other forums fit up a 4Runner, Tacoma, Jeep, or Power Wagon just to realize they wanted something different after a couple of trips.

There is no need to wait for a breakin period. It is usually easier to do mods while new and clean, IME.

Tires: that’s it. Dealerships will do everything they can to void a warranty because of customer add on & modifications. Way back when, I used to pull the front driveshaft on my rubicon with every oil change, inspect and lube up the centering thing the best I could without zerks using a needle fitting on the gun. The shaft failed anyway while under warranty. Dealership wouldn’t cover it because, at that time, I had 1” spring spacers all around and fitted 33” skinny tires on it. If he’s gonna do things right away he better get things in writing.
