XJs are great rigs, however they are getting hard to find a clean one for a decent price. there is also pretty good aftermarket support for WJs and the 4.7 makes it a bit more fun. Personally I have a 4Runner and am looking to trade into a pickup. There are pros and cons to everything. I like the ability to have the roof top tent mounted low. Up here in Idaho our trails are tight and the lower profile is desirabl. It also helps with center of gravity too.
if you can attend a local meetup And talk to some experienced members in your area it might help you lots.

The XJ are great base vehicles to build an overlanding vehicle, I think. Unfortunately also in Europe more and more difficult to get something in good condition and well maintained. And if there is something good on the second-hand market, they are sold very quickly. I have always liked the XJ, especially the angular shape, which is also practical, for easy installation of storage, drawers, etc. inside and for loading.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on a Jeep XJ for a first rig? And what is y’all’s opinion on the first modification one should do?
Whatever you choose for a ride, jump in it and go for a quick overnight or 2. Then modify based on shortcomings or wants. There are the obvious items to have for safety and recovery, but those are not mod's.

Fabulous, affordable rig with used parts, new parts, after market parts everywhere.... and a massive following of other XJ owners for advice.

Ticks all the boxes for me,

affordable
4.0L engine.... in so many other 4x4s too.... proven and durable
solid axles, bullet proof if you don't get excessive with monster truck tires.
compact yet kinda spacious if you travel light

And the XJ owners forums are out there to support whatever ya want to do.... there is even one for street racing an XJ.

First mod is pack some food and sleeping bags, maybe a tent and go on a weekend overland trip.
THEN you decide what you think the first mod should be. My bet is it will involve refrigeration or shelter.
Completely stock with good stock size tires the XJ really is Trail Ready.

XJ is one of the best wheelers ever made. First mods will be checking the boxes, and getting the welder out to stitch them up. Unibody loves to crack, but it's nothing that a good bead can't fix. Lunchbox lockers front and rear. (Heck, most of the ones in Ohio have the rear diffs welded solid)

They need to bring it back, but it would cost as much as a Wrangler 4 door.
