Hello my name is Ben. My wife Makayla and I are new to overlanding but rather overly excited about it. We just got a 2014 Jeep Wrangler unlimited sport. All stock for now. We are looking forward to using overlanding as a family getaway with our 2 kids here in beautiful northern CO.

Welcome to the boards, Ben and Makayla.

We just traded our JK for a different platform. The JK is an amazing rig in a lot of ways, and the Sport model is basically a blank canvas to paint with.

You mentioned wife and kids so the biggest thing to remember is that your JK has a stunted payload (it's why we traded ours), and weight it can add up fast. There's a thread over on ExPo in the jeep forums where I weighed all of our stuff (Username: ChasingOurTrunks) and it's easy to make a JK overweight. Keep that in mind when buying stuff like bumpers, roof racks, etc. Light weight stuff made from aluminum may seem costly, but its a great example of "buy once, cry once" and gives you the most flexibility down the road -- Think more "backpacking" than "Glamping" and you should be fine.

May you and your wife have many happy adventures -- I know we sure did in ours! -- and if you have any rig questions, shoot us a PM.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll check that out.
