With regards to roof racks, is it better to mount the axe cutting edge up, or down? And with shovels, long handle or medium "D" handle? What are your thoughts?
Thanks

View attachment 71441 I run a short shovel reinforced blade. Fire axe with blade up so water doesn't settle on cutting edge. And an ABC rechargeable fire extinguisher.

I carry a long handle very sturdy shovel and I keep my axes in the boxes to keep them from rusting, so "on their sides" as it were. I carry the long handle b/c it is much more useful getting coals from the fire for the dutch ovens, great for digging, and can be used as a reasonably stout prybar that I've actually used to pry open a trunk after a minor car wreck so a young lady could get to her baby's diaper bag that was in there.

This is my shovel, nothing expensive, nor worth locking up but a very useful tool in many situations.

I don't use my axes much since I have a bad shoulder and can't really swing them properly but they are there sharp and ready to go should I need one.
