Most "Classic" Overland Rig?

So I was wondering what everybody regarded as the most "classic" rig to take overland. If you look back, the FJ's, Land Rover's, Willys Jeeps/Wagons...what do you guys think goes down as the one that truly pioneered overlanding? Or, the rig that made the biggest impact in the hobby?

Land Rovers. In my opinion made the biggest impact, not only the early years but the Camel Trophy event was one of the best marketing plans to date. But I'm biased as this is mine

Being new to overlanding and a Wrangler lover. I would say that the Land Rover is the iconic overland rig also. When I think overland I think of Land Rover.

I agree, though lots of vehicles come to mind. Sadly, and I can say this because I own one, the most recent designs don't feel iconic overland to me. The exit of the LR4/Discovery 4 for the new Discovery makes a lot of us very sad. Don't get me wrong, it's going to be a great and highly capable vehicle, but it just looks like every other rounded SUV on the market.

I guess I should have clarified I meant the older ones. Don't get me wrong I'D LOVE a minty fresh 2017 Rover! Haha! But when I close my eyes and think of an overland rig it's definitely an older Rover!

I agree with you! I think some of the newer Rovers, especially the Defender and Discovery4 are the last of the iconic Rovers, though the old timers are it!

I would say camel trophy Rovers and years are what comes to mind. [emoji106]

I really am surprised nobody has chimed in for Toyota, such as the FJ40 or 45's. I can understand the Willys Jeep/wagon getting over looked completely. While they were marketed heavily in the 4x4 market, it was never for long distance overland travel. I honesty think the FJ40 could give an early LR for the title...but that's just me.

I agree with the general consensus around Land Rover... but I think some credit is due to the old VW microbus, as they helped usher in more of the life-on-the-road feel.
