I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with both of these apps. I have been using TopoMaps+ all summer and really like it. I have heard a lot of people talking about Gaia and being happy with it lately. I'm wondering if it offers anything extra over TopoMaps that make it worth the switch....

I work for Gaia full disclaimer.

I am not familiar with this app but will download it and take a look. Here's the developers website for more details, https://www.glacierpeakstudios.com

One of the biggest differences between the two would be the availability of different map types.

Here are all of the different map layers available in Gaia GPS.

Here's what is listed on the TopoMaps+ Website:
Topo Maps+ has maps for any adventure you want to go on.

  • NRCAN/GEOBC Topo Maps cover southern and western Canada.
  • Glacier Topo is a beautiful world wide topographic map with hiking and biking trails.
  • Thunderforest is a world wide topographic map with hiking, biking, and skiing trails.
  • LINZ Topo Map is the the ultimate backcountry map for New Zealand.
  • Satellite Map lets you see satellite imagery for the entire world.
There are pro versions of each app. Gaia GPS is now called premium vs pro. You would have to make a comparison yourself as to what features are most important to you. Pro for Topo Maps + is $59.99 a year vs $29.99 with Gaia GPS. The NeoTreks layers and Hunting Overlays in TopoMaps+ Pro are available in Gaia GPS for less money along with many more additional map layers.

How the app function (user interface) is a bit different between the two. The base cost for Gaia GPS on iOS is now $9.99 a year. It looks like to get high resolution maps on Topo Maps + that would cost $19.99 a year.

If there is a particular feature or map you really like in your app let me know. I would be happy to tell you if Gaia GPS has something similar.

For how I use a map application for off-roading/overlanding Gaia GPS is much better suited for my needs. It is also less expensive. Everyone is different and this is at first glance having downloaded TopoMaps+ while writing this post.

I have used Gaia GPS for over 4 years and compared it to many different apps. None have convinced me to switch and that was prior to ever working for Gaia GPS part-time.

Thanks,
Chris
