I thought this might be a fun thing for the forum...

Below is a map of a gear layout (cab area, cargo area, and exterior) for a hypothetical extended journey by one or two people. The layout is based on my own camping experience and a lot of reading about overlanding. Seasoned overlanders might find this map to be humorous, but we all have to start somewhere!

Vehicle: 2nd Gen Nissan Xterra with roof rack, Sherpa exterior side panels, and interior molle panels by roXterra.com.

Weight it important. Space is limited. Be creative in your suggestions. Suggestions may be incorporated in revisions to the map.

Please post your advice and comments. Hopefully this will turn into an interesting discussion we can all learn from!

Well that was interesting but if you are like me that will last for maybe 2 trips, I review my gear every 6 months and often adjust my packing between trips. But I am kind of a random guy at best, I always have the shovel, TP, and 1st aid kit right at hand though.

WARNING
RUBBERMAID ACTION PACKERS DO NOT FIT - 2013 Xterra

Just learned an expensive lesson. Despite the many videos that tout the value of #Rubbermaid #Action Packers as fitting behind the front seat, on the floor in place of the second row of seating, these bins do NOT fit a 2013 Xterra. Too wide. To make them fit, my seat has to be fully forward with my body at the steering wheel (and I'm not a large person), impossible to drive in this position.

Still, the Action Packers are the right height to meet the folded-down seat, which extends the sleeping area about a foot. I'm doubting the value of this because I'll need to find someplace else to store these bulky bins while driving.
