What brand of oils and grade do you use?
I've been reading a lot of people upgrading their older toyotas to synthetic oils.

What about upgrading to waterless coolant? It doesn't freeze and boils over at crazy temps.

What are your opinions?

I'm driving a 17 YO Jeep so I guess "older" rigs may be relative. IMO, run what the manufacturer recommends unless there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
  • F&R diffs = Lucas Oil SAE 80w90 gear oil
  • Transfer case = Valvoline ATF
  • Transmission = Red Line SAE 75w80 GL-4 manual transmission lubricant
  • Engine = 10w30 and, rarely, 5w30 - I pick up whatever is cheapest on Amazon (e.g. Quaker State, Chevron Supreme, etc.). I'm a believer that, in an engine like the 4.0L in my Jeep, it is more important that you change your oil frequently rather than what oil you put in it.
  • Coolant = I think it's Prestone. I've never really had chronic overheating problems so I haven't entertained the idea of changing to anything else - I would like to hear if anyone has experience with other fluids though!

In all honesty, in the 20+ years of driving all ages of vehicles (early 70's and newer) I have never been brand specific. Fresh fluids, nothing fancy and I've never had a fluid related problem.
