Hay guys and gals. Just signed up today. Working to get my truck going to be able to get going again in the mountains. Been way too long. I see some people from the area. Hope to meet you all this summer sometime. Love to hear from anyone in Oregon.View attachment 194845
My truck has a very tired motor. My trips will only be a short ways off the highways. Hopefully by next summer she could have a rebuilt motor. I am starting from scratch. I don't even have a sleeping bag or cook stove yet.Welcome I’m from Eugene too. Looking forward to making some trips this summer, I’d like something fairly close to home for my first couple of trips to test some new gear and get things better organized.

I have owned both, and also worked in an engine shop for many years.See I have heard both things. That the 6.9 is better and that the 7.3 is better. I have had both and really don't see much of a difference. It's about $1,500.00 for a rebuild for my 6.9. I have not completely made up my mind on which way to go. Mine also has the 3speed auto, I think its a 3. Part of me thinks about swapping out the auto for a manual, but I have been driving manual commercially for a long time and not sure if I want to keep doing it.
It's all about the money. I had not planned on doing overland like this when I had made all the decisions on the truck. My funding is beyond limited. With all this going on my boss can not afford to really pay me. So they are helping out with my truck when they can. I actually rent a room from them as partial pay. I am sure I will not be getting much more work done on my truck this year. I am looking and doing some woodworking projects and other things to try to make some money. The biggest thing I need to buy now is tires. You can see by the photo of my truck I really can't trust them off highway, or even on highway really at this point.I have owned both, and also worked in an engine shop for many years.
Tranny swap at the same time as an engine swap is probably the best way to go. They (Ford) do make some really nice 6 speed autos that will drop in behind either engine (with some modifications) There is a guy on the Full sized Bronco Forums dropping a 7.3 motor along with a 6 speed auto into a 1987 Bronco. Pretty sweet ride... but a lot of fab work. The C6 is a great transmission for a
1/2 ton... one tons they are kind of week. You could also look at an 4R100 (4 speed OD) that came behind the 7.3 Power Stroke.

I’m into a new engine and a 5 speed ZF swap just over 2 g. It’s all about finding deals... Junkyards are your friend... just keep looking for a low mile wreck... they are out there. It's all about the money. Oh I already have plans. I have let my boss know I have got to get some time off soon and take off for some weekend exploring. I just have to stick close to home so if I brake my boss doesn't have to go to Bend to get me. lol Just have some things to finish up and find some money for tires.David there are some great places to go that at close and watch Craigslist for gear. I also took advantage of some close out items at REI. Get out if you can don’t wait till next summer
