I’m planning a trip from Texas to the San Juan Mountains in Colorado this mid-July, coming back early August. Looking for higher elevation dispersed camping in New Mexico to stop on the way up and back. Looking at the area north of Red River, Lagunita Saddle area caught my eye. Preferably it would be a place more remote, harder to get to so it’s not as crowded. We will be in very capable 4x4 rigs so rough terrain and is fine, far from pavement is even better.

Any suggestions from those in that area or that have been there camping?

Not looking for organized family campground… dispersed is the way.

Most of the places I would have recommended are closed to public access due to the massive number of big fires they have had so far this year. Unless it's a really wet July I would suggest you look for places in Colorado.
