Hey guys! My first thread, I've really been enjoying this community though. Friendly informative place.

My wife and I are seriously considering attending OEW 2019 and making a long trip out of it, we've never been out west, and I've always wanted to get out on some of the awesome trails and gorgeous public land you westerners get to enjoy all the time. We've both spent our entire lives doing different types of outdoor and camping activities, but have only recently really gotten into the vehicle-dependant version of camping and exploring. This is marking a lifestyle shift for us, we have a 7 month old daughter, and we've decided that we want to spend as much time outdoors as a family as possible. So taking our 4runner out, exploring and camping is THE thing we're doing now, every chance we get. We don't have the time and energy to do intense, mile burning backpacking trips on the weekends in between heavy work loads Monday through Friday. But we love getting out, riding around remote areas, exploring and getting some awesome scenery! I also have been interested in the more technical aspect of offroading for a long time. That's a bit difficult in Texas, public land resources are limited, but there are still options.
We are interested in learning more, I'm somewhat of an offroad novice, and theres just a lot of cool resources and info out there that the expo's seem to offer. We're also already starting to talk about longer trips, even taking a 3-6 month work hiatus in a few years, just to travel and explore, before our daughter is school age. I have a few questions though:

1) Would we benefit from attending one of the expos, or is it just a "cool distraction" with a bunch of awesome gear? To be clear, I love awesome gear. Probably too much. I just don't want to invest the time and money into attending if the biggest thing we'll be doing is wandering around and drooling. That type of thing doesn't do me any good normally. I'm not hating on the expos. they seem awesome. I've watched the rig walkaround videos, everything. Just trying to be careful to not go down a rabbit hole that encourages me to spend unnecessary amounts of money.

2) How do tickets work? I've researched and read online, I know they're made available on the website, but I can't even find any info for the 2019 expos yet. And the ticket links don't work for any of the expos?

3) How hard is it to get full weekend camping tickets?

4) Does OB normally have a gathering at the Expo's? I know there was one for west this year, not sure if that's an every year thing.

5) Are there other things entirely that I should be focusing my time and resource energy on INSTEAD of an expo, that would be more beneficial for us simply wanting to learn and grow in this lifestyle?

Hi Ben,
I'll jump in, and try to answer some of your questions. But I'll start with, why wait? You can attend the East Event, this fall in North Carolina. Tickets haven't been put on-sale, yet.
The 2019 West event will be at Fort Tuthill again, the weekend of May 17-19. Tickets for 2019 won't go on sale until Feb 1, or thereabouts. Tickets for the Full Weekend Camping, sell out.

# 1 - Yes, you would benefit from attending. There were great talks, discussions, and presentations. One of the best talks was about FEAR versus Paranoia, and Security. Another was Ted Simon's talk. Yes, to awesome
gear and the rabbit hole.
# 2 - They go on sale about 90 days before the event, there is an advanced package that we should have purchased.
# 3 - We purchased our tickets on day 2, wasn't a big deal.
# 4 - This year at 2018 West, Michael and Corrie set up an OB area in the Camping area, but we didn't camp with them in the OB area, however it was great to meet Michael & Corrie in person.
# 5 - This is a tough question. My Mrs & I have wanted to attend Expo West for several years, other things got in our way. This year we set our sights and went. We were glad we did. While there was lots of gear, it's the people, places and rigs. Meeting people from all over the globe. Listening to different perspectives. Purchasing the Overland Sourcebook. We met old friends, caught up with old suppliers, made new friends and learned new things.
The West event has grown, and the camping was a zoo. But we all got along and it' was actually amazingly quiet.
A Quote I heard at lunch on one of the days "Money is the Enemy of Adventure." I leave you with another quote from Clay at XO - "Go, repair, refine, reset" Clay said several times "Keep it simple."

Jim,
It's the 126 page Booklet of Products, Services and Resources. $ 5.00 in Media tent. Best money spent there, besides the beer and food. DG

Yall this is great info. Thanks for the speedy responses! One of the many reasons I love this forum. I've always been involved in online vehicle focused forums, but the trolls exist in force, and it often makes the experience of asking a question unpleasant. I feel like i'm actually interacting with individuals here, not trolls lol.

David, for your answer, thank you! Pretty much everything I was looking for. From what you guys are saying, its good confirmation that attending an expo could actually be beneficial. Also, I look forward to growing connections with this community.
We would actually love to go to the East expo this year, but limited vacation time, work schedules, and already planned holiday time have eaten up all free time we've got for the year. Next year I'm possibly getting a huge jump in PTO, and it would give us more time to really plan that trip well. If we're going out west, we want to make the most of it and hit some trails and areas we wouldn't have been able to see otherwise.
