Off road wise, heavy dust or fog. being high mounted helps with distance. If you were a desert race truck, their mandatory. In all the years of desert off road diving I think I really needed them twice. On the other hand, you can tell where people are way ahead of you.
Fog on the street is a bit iffy. The better ones will blind the crap out of people. I know this because I have to keep telling people to turn them off if i get within 20 yards of them.

The downside to running an Amber dust light is that if you use it at desert race then all of the racers will assume that you are another racer. That means that you are subject to being "bumped" if they decide that you're not getting out of the way fast enough. My advice is to NOT turn it on if you're anywhere near a desert race course that is in use. Most often used on desert race vehicles are amber fog lights. If you're being blinded by such a light it's got the wrong lens on it or it is way too powerful. Think about it, you're not in danger of being run into by the guy who's a mile behind you. You're in danger of being run into by the guy who's 20 yards behind you. Blinding him or her is a bad idea.

I know that it triggers OCD episodes due to a lack of symmetry, but you really only need one dust light.

Are folks just using chase lights as a static always on when in convoy, or are they being wired in to vehicle electronics as running lights/ brake light additions?

The rules for a desert race vehicle are that the Dust Light must come on with the ignition.

I have the Dust Light on my chase/support truck on a switch. Don't need it on all of the time, not even when in the dirt.

On the street, some of them will blind people behind you. I run into that on the trail sometimes. I come up behind someone and and their bright amber light blinds me.
