We just drove through The northeastern part of Colorado early last week en route back to Boston. The North Sterling state park had an Inlet Grove (?) campground that was pleasant enough. Picnic tables and shelters just like they have in Badlands National Park. On a burm overlooking a lake. Can be a little on the windy side due to a slight comparative elevation and no trees, but nice sunsets and sunrises. There were lots of spots available a week and a half ago

Here's the view from our present campsite this weekend. It's in the Fourmile area near Buena Vista.
Under no circumstances would I ever recommend Buffalo Hills RV park and campground out by route 6 near the Ramada. We were looking for a spot on the fly and maybe didnt pay attention to reviews when we tried to book online. The guy who runs the place is a total douchebag. Gin blossomed ass hat with a menacing sidekick as well. And the place itself is a Godforsaken mess. And way too close to the highway to be restful at all.
We were wary enough that we decided to up and leave and go to North Sterling. This after already having paid online, and not yet having set up camp. It was that ugly and disconcerting.

I try to avoid privately owned campgrounds as much as possible. I hate KOA/Good Sams. As a tent camper all you hear all night is loud people, loud generators and they cram you in like sardines. Like you mentioned too often they are too close to a highway where you hear road noises all night.
I've had 1 'okay" experience at a private campground it was fine, but I probably wouldn't go back. And in all my years I've only had one really nice exp at a privately owned campground where I would return. Not quite dispersed but good enough.
My upcoming trip I do have 1 night reserved at a private campground. And I paid extra for a "premium" spot. They have overall good reviews online, but we'll just have to wait and see. I just wanted to ensure I had a reserved place and the nearby public places didn't do reservations.
