Best Conversion Platform...

I love my ZJ, but it's tough for two people on longer trips (>2 weeks). When traveling cross country, there are too many places you can't set up tent (Truck Stops, Rest Areas, Walmart, etc.). I've got a Moho, but it has no off-road capability. I'm looking for something similar to a SportsMobile, but that I can afford.

I've been looking at two possibilities. A School Bus (short), or an Ambulance. Both are available in 4WD, and Diesel!!!





Most small Motorhomes are built on the cheap, for the lowest end of the market. Made to survive one weekend a month and two weeks a year, if that. My favorite thing about these two platforms, is that they're so over built. Big axles, big brakes, big engines, big transmissions.

Both, generally speaking, see a lot of idling and slow driving. Both would most likely be maintained very well, too. I've never sen a 4WD short but before. That's pretty cool! We don't have 4WD ambulances around here, either, but I've at least seen them before.

My grandfather and three of his buddies built up an old school bus to drive to Alaska way before the roads were paved.

No experience at all, but wouldn't the separate cab and box be more flexible for serious twisting than the cheese box?

Definitely something you'd find in a mountain town. You're right about them being well-maintained. Most would be fleet managed.
