We have been contemplating doing videos to go along with our trips. We have just taken stills for years now, but kind of want more. We are in the try it and decide stages.

I was curious if others do the same? If so, any advice or tips are greatly appreciated. I put this together Sunday after teaching the wife how the 4wd works. The video isn’t exciting because it’s just that, her learning how to use it. But it’s an example of how I am currently doing it.

We do our main trip in Sept and everybody takes video and pics. After the trip one of the guys puts it all together into a movie and we get together before Thanksgiving and have a movie watching party weekend. Awesome time watching and remembering and enjoying each other again. Since USB drives became cheap each guy gets one in Nov with the movie, GPS data, and whatever else. We have 17 years worth of videos that bring back great memories of when we were younger and they have been awesome to have most recently. For a large group it can be a hassle to do all the filming, picture taking, etc. - like herding kittens. But once everybody sees the value they were right on board.

Exactly. I am amazed at the things I had forgotten when watching our videos. My buddy goes over the top with his editing make a full length feature films with effects and funny segments, etc. He does a great job and even sends out short trailers to whip up the frenzy. Making the effort is definitely worth it in my opinion.

It is really easy to forget things that happen along the trips. Or in my case, not be able to recall where you saw something, just that you saw it. Which is hard to recall using still images, since they only show that single frame. We have our photos framed at the house, but many times you only remember key events of the trip that way.

i started playing with video in 2016, using light works on my Lenovo. But I’m thinking I need to buy a new MacBook at some point to continue (have an old one for photos that works much better for it). But that’s a price tag I don’t want right now. Lol

Yep, have the same MacBook lust going on but wow, that is an investment. One thing I have found over the years is that Apple hardware remains viable longer than PC hardware - just my experience, not meaning to start a war ;)
I have the memory of a sieve so the videos are awesome to help remember.

I'm not talented on videos at all, but I'm one of those guys that have a bunch of footage that never gets edited. I feel like the hardest part is the sitting down and taking the time to edit videos and make it viewable. I am thinking of attempting to do it one day just so I can share with friends and convince more of them to off road and go camping.

Editing is brutal, I really don't enjoy it. But if you capture the footage now at least editing in the future will be a possibility.

That is true. My wife bugs me about the drone and GoPro footage I got from Hawaii a couple of years ago that I still haven't touched. Maybe now is a good time to start YouTubing video editing workshops. Starting to run out of projects at home to work on.

I agree on MacBook being best option. That’s why I’m waiting until I can get what I want, even if it is 3k. Lol.

I hate the editing so far too. The audio really gets me, trying to find copyright free music is a pain. But no music is terribly boring... so I search. lol

I can imagine from the sounds of what I hear over and over on YouTube ;) Not a lot of good stuff out there for free evidently. Our stuff is not public and we have some original music so we don't worry about it.

Spent a month in New Mexico ran my dash cam nearly every time I started the Jeep. I have downloaded it to my laptop but don't know anything about editing. Maybe after my ham test this week, I will start learning about editing and posting.
