@aminmohmed11 Good & reliable is a hard question to answer, what country you actually in is half the answer.

In North America, Jeep & Toyota are the simplest and most common, but you will find literally everything here.

Then you need to decide what you are going to do, basic gravel road travel ,more technical and difficult trails.

Best to open your thread prove a bit of info on where you are and what you want to do then you can get some useful feedback

I stumbled across this subreddit a while back and am in love with it now. I would really like to get into overlanding but I dont have a huge budget and currently drive a ford focus. I am saving some money to get something, but what is a good reliable vehicle to start building a platform on? I've been looking to rooftop tents too and Love that idea.
If you have a small budget but already a car - and if it is a simple car like your Focus - why not just start with a roof top tent on that car and some boxes to properly and safely store your camping gear inside the car and give it a start? WWith a normal car you can already see so many beautiful places. And if you really like it, upgrade to a 4x4 later and keep the roof top tent for the 4x4 then. It is not about the rig, it is about the adventures and happy moments we collect while on the road! Just get out and explore!

We all, or most all of us started with what we had. I started with a 65/66 VW Bug. I had no money, no gear, no nothing. Just a water jug, some hand tools, a cheap sleeping bag and the desire to explore the high deserts of the southwest. As time passed I modified the bug, added a roof rack, a back pack, a tent and some good hiking boots. I’d think more than twice about attaching an RTT to a Ford Focus. That’s a lot of weight up high. In the compact world a ground tent is a great start.
