Enthusiast III
This has turned out to be more of a blog than a few pictures. I hope you don't mind and enjoy the scenery.
I sure did. I know my photography skills are nill but I think Colorado makes up for my lack of ability. I am open to criticism and suggestions for my next dissertation.
This is my first Overland trip of any length in quite a while. It was over 3,000 miles in the round trip from Georgia to Colorado. I purchased a new 2016 4Runner Trail Premium for the confidence needed to tackle the rough spots along the way. The object of my all too short expedition was to ride some great trails and camp where I ended each day. Usually both were somewhat unknown locations at the beginning of each day. Well at least in the first part of the trip before my wife flew out to meet me. Not that she is not adventurous in nature, believe me she is, but she is a bit more in need of a plan than I.
After many hours of highway driving the rewards came into view. And the air got thin! Where is that O2 bottle?
Can you say "INCOMING"
Did I say America the Beautiful? These scenes should be next to OMG in the new dictionaries. Stop and
watch the birds fly here for added pleasure.
OK So this is a new experience for me, but if you recognize this, my hat is off to you! It's the
intersection of Red Cone Trail and Webster Pass. Red Cone is a "Red" trail. Doable but mistakes
(like panic breaking) are not an option in some parts! This awesome vehicle came up
Webster Pass before I descended. There was another truck coming up but I did not see him until
I was three quarters of the way to the next passing point. Thankfully that driver backed a fairly short distance which let me off the hook for a long uphill backing. I say this because it is a very narrow shelf and it might have left a mark if I had backed all the way to the top. Thanks again to that driver.
And a huge thanks to Matt Peterson at FunTreks. I told Matt I was looking for a really great trail
with memorable views. I also told Matt about my vehicle and my limited experience on these
mountain trails. I also mentioned that I needed to do the tougher trails before my wife arrived.
Matt said Webster Pass was where I should go. Well Matt, it was everything you said. Thanks
again for the personal touch.
My wife was probably envious when she saw the pictures but that shelf road would have put her
"over the edge!" In case you didn't know, Matt and Charles Wells write awesome guide books for
people like us who are looking for places to drive and camp in Colorado and Utah. Check it out!
My confidence is growing. This stock 4Runner has already done things I did not know could be
done. Thanks Toyota!
I came across a great site for a night under the stars. This was my first night in the ENO and
no tent. Awesome!
Back to civilization for a reunion with my wife and a meet up with friends to see Bonnie Raitt at
Red Rocks Amphitheater. This has to be one of the greatest music venues in the world! And Bonnie
is still singing like no one else can. Thank you Bonnie! Thank you Red Rocks!
And a huge Thanks to Michael and Corrie for this platform and inspiration.
