I came across (Pinterest) a couple of photos today, that got me thinking...

... of ways to utilize my spare, other than just Trasharoo & Maxtrax. I'm also looking at the possibility of putting the Maxtrax on the hood...

(but in black to kill glare).

Thoughts? Ideas?

P.S. Any FJ guys know how he was able to get both a house AND telephone poll on his roof rack?

A couple things to consider:

Tires are already pretty heavy, and the off road tire you likely have back there is significantly heavier than the OEM tire your carrier was intended to carry. Adding something like a cooler or firewood carrier hanging off the back of that may end up damaging the tire mount or carrier over time. That is a lot of weight that is now levered off the back of the tire, which itself is levering the entire vehicle. Every time you go over a bump, the weight of that stuff is going to be multiplied. If you are running an FJ Cruiser, that means you are repeatedly yanking down on your tire mount, the connection between the mount and the door, and the latch and hinges of the rear door itself.

I usually see racks and systems like this on Jeeps with minimal cargo space, they also typically have reinforced spare tire carriers of some sort. Even though my tire is mounted on a custom bumper swing, I still only put the Trasharoo (maybe recovery boards in the future) on the spare to try to reduce the punishment inflicted on those parts.

I hear ya. I've got a pretty beefy aftermarket steel bumper and swing out. I think it can handle it. I wouldn't do a cooler. I was thinking more along the lines of camping chairs, etc.

You take them off the spare before you remove it from the rack. When you put the flat on the carrier, you re-attach all your gear to the flat tire.
