I’m looking to do a week solo starting and ending in Bakersfield, CA. What sites should I hit? Preferably tent camping but I can sleep in the cab if I need to.

Try 178 from Bakersfield to lake Isabella. Stop at sandy hill camp site.
Vista point us another spot to check out. Kernville is another stop to try. I hope this helps, its been awhile since I've been that way. But the 178 and 155 has some great spots to Visit

What time of year? Summer in the desert can be a killer. Summer time go up in altitude, Winter Death Valley, Shoulder Season, Mohave Preserve. Lots of stuff is within a days drive of Bakersfield. Trona Pinnacles, Ancient Bristlecone trees, Rainbow Basin, Cerro Gordo and the Salt tram, Long Valley, The DV Escape trail. Yosemite. A lot depends on your interests, geology, history, solitude.....
