QST QST QST Calling all overlanding ham radio operators who would like to consider combining a Field Day entry and a weekend of camping and adventuring over the June 25-26 weekend in northern Virginia, in the George Washington Nat'l Forest. The radio event runs from 2pm Saturday until 2pm...
An information, which is especially interesting for all members here based in Germany or those who travel Germany.
With the amendment of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) in 2017, the so-called "cell phone ban" while driving was introduced. As part of the revision of §23 of the Road...
SHOWCASE YOUR SUPER CLEAN INSTALL.
I worked really hard to do a SUPER CLEAN INSTALL for my Midland MXT 275. It was a pain but I am really happy I put in the extra effort. I even managed to put in a handheld charging station. I am looking to install a Midland DBR2500 and needs some ideas...
Since there was apparently confusion: Intended goal of this survey is to find out what our members use in EUROPE to understand this better and to develop the topic comms here. That's the reason why I wrote it in "Mid Europe" instead of "Communications" sub-forum. But of course, all experiences...
This thread I will be showing gear choice, how I pack it, radios, navigation, recovery gear and whatever else. I have a '18 4Runner without a lift and have done some great trips and camping. New gear that I picked up is a Midland 40w GMRS radio and solar generator and panel. I will update with...
New to overlanding and offroading, and now tackling comms. I bought both types of radios. Now figuring out what goes where.
I'm thinking if I'd only need one type of radio at a time (true? false?) then I could:
Mount both radios side by side
They could share an antenna mount
They could...
Ever get camp set up, and you go to turn on some jams, and you cant get fm radio, or wifi? Sure you could play some music stored on your phone, but that just drains the battery.
I looked unsuccessfully for a solution, and decided to just make one!
I scored a Sirius Radio, and purchased the...
Hey All,
I am relatively new to communication equipment. I used to have CB in my last vehicle but never really used it much because most of my buddies use handheld radios for trail comms. I am looking at adding permanent comms to my new rig and was curious if there was something that would be...

My new to me tow vehicle came without a center console. There was plenty of space, and I definitely wanted to use as much as I could. At the same time, I had a stack of 50 caliber ammo can taking space in my garage.
Look at all that real estate!
Step one! Make a level playing field. I...
Hello!
I'm looking to get a digital dual band 2m/70cm radio for my vehicle (D-Star or Fusion) and I'm wondering if anyone here would like to share their opinions/stories/rants! on which one, if any, they use or prefer.
I mostly travel East of the Mississippi, and the radios I'm looking at are...
TLDR: Wife and I wanted a way to talk to groups without use needing to become radio operators. I programmed the Rugged Radio defaults & GMRS channels 17-22 on my hand held radios. If you want to know the logic please read on.
I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and influence. I haven't...
So I've got a 2011 Toyota Tacoma quad cab and have 2 communications systems that need a home. Where oh where did you put yours and how did you secure them in?
Hello!
I bought a new vehicle recently for my overlanding shenanigans and am in the process of deciding what I should have as far as group comms go. My travels will take me from the center of the busiest cities, to the middle of nowhere (hopefully =) ). As of now, I have/am getting the...
What are the advantages of having a ham radio and a cb radio or instead of cb??
I already have a cb in my suburban.
It's a Uniden 787 with a .....hhmmm...I forget if it's a k30 or k40 antenna . It worked well back home in Michigan, but here in the mountains of north Idaho. ....not so much.

What a cool form factor, I've been considering adding a dedicated GMRS radio to my truck but hate to dedicate the dash space for mounting the transceiver...
Hello,
When your on the trail how do you communicate with each other? Do you use radios (I.e. CB, HAM, Other) or hand signals, vehicle signals, or another form?
Do different groups have different methods?
Selling my Diamond K400, used once. My needs changed and I am going a different direction with my antenna.
$45 + Ship (or pick up if local)
PM for more photos please!
Some one asked me what SOTA is, so I did a brief description. I thought I would expand it a bit here, as it could tie into Overlanding, IMO.
