I'm starting to rethink the idea of getting lost in the backwoods somewhere. A quad would make the journey so much better. That's an excellent way to disappear for a week or so.
I had a similar Grand Canyon experience except that I was camped for the night in the forest on the north rim. I ended up running the heater midway through the night. What month were you there?
I used to say that there is nothing better than getting paid to see the country. While I still somewhat believe that, it is still a job and there are tradeoffs. There is always a schedule to keep. You are always on the go.

I have an 03 RAM 1500 short bed, 2 door cab, 4x4, 5.7 hemi. Not sure of the differential gearing. On stock tires I can get 14-15 mpg. Loaded down I am down around 10-11.
