I have been working on fixing up the wife's highlander to be a bit more overlandable. You can follow the project in the forums at
2018 Toyota Highlander XLE - Backcountry Discovery Route Build
So we have made some progress over the last few weeks.
Had a Ready Lift 2 inch lift kit installed last week. Had the alignment done the next day at Commercial tire here in Boise.
Took most of the Yakima Rack parts off of my LJ and put those on the highlander (canoe mounts, cross bars, awning)...
So I was considering building or buying a RAV4 Hybrid to use for some of my geology field work in the interest of fuel consumption savings. The regular Calhoun Geologic Enterprises, PLLC field vehicle is a 2006 Rubicon LJ (11-15 mpg).
In the interest of some financial prudence I happened to...
This whole thing is a hot mess. Who ever is administrator never gives a straight answer. I reached out several times. I was a founder but then I started contributing 19.99 or 20 bucks a month and had the benefactor label and I received occasional goodies from OB. One administrator indicated...
Bought a replacement front driveshaft for 2006 LJ rubicon after it was severely damaged on a run. Want to buy. A 5 gallon galvanized Indian fire fighting sprayer for the spare tire rack
Last week Saturday, 4/22/2023 I led a the Homesteaders run as part of the annual Three Club Run south of Mountain Idaho. These was a scenic run for folks who enjoy the dirt roads. I conducted a good deal of Tread Lightly instruction about not spinning tires and staying on the dirt paths.
Today I was part of the High Desert Off Road adopt a highway and trail clean up out near Hemingway Butte, Idaho near the Snake River. After enjoying a club provided BarB Q of Burgers and hot dogs, 4 of us in Jeeps and 1 88 Bronco vehicles ran a challenging trail called Carnage.
Took the LJ on a chili cook off Christmas tree run in the snow with some local friends and my awesome wife towards Sagehen Reservoir, about 20 miles in the snow which was on average 1.5 feet deep. Used the tug ‘‘em straps several times folks dug in our drove in the ditch. Great trip and a...
Did a night run with the crew from one of our local 4 wheel drive clubs last night . Went up Grimes Creek Rd, to a place called Miners Grave and back down to Idaho City which is an old mining town.
Lots of great information provided. My only addition is get the others trained as is appropriate for their ages. As a previous respondent indicated it is best to get formal training. Training with friends is not always the best. Also a structured environment like a range is a great place to...
Keeping it simple, bled the brakes on the Rubicon LJ, replaced the door limiting strap. Blew out the radiator and transmission cooler with air, did a reprogram with the Banks AutoMind (set it to towing) as the performance 91 setting was to hot and it kept pinging.
The LJ is a great platform. I like the comments. I create a list of items to bring using my to do list app. Then we also keep a list of what we needed or forgot. Before building out your rig I would do some trips first. We have done mock backpacking trips from our vehicles where we basically...
