Depends on the day but probably the norm. It can change quickly either way though. The Grasslands always has some wind though.

Thanks. I think the last time I randomly camped next to Horesetooth was 2007… I’d point you towards Buffalo creek then. Connifer to Buffalo Creek CR126- go west on FR550.

Check out the Buffalo Creek and Rampart Range area too. You should be able to disperse camp along Horsetooth reservoir but it’s been a while since I have so that could have changed.

Don’t hotel it. Where are you grabbing the tent? What city? Are you in a time crunch to get back?

Snow pack may be a bigger concern than crowds. I’m not super familiar with that area but I’d check road closure in that area and go from there. It’s still early in the year so crowds aren’t really a thing yet.

It’s very hard for me to compare RTT’s and ground tents because of the price differences. You’ll always get more features and benefits with an RTT because of the cost. You have to be in the right mind set either way.

With ground tents, you get what you pay for however there is a point where some features will be overkill. I've had very good luck with MSR with both rain, wind, and durability. I don't own a Gazelle but it does look intriguing since you can stand up inside. However it doesn't pack down nearly...
