Thanks Advocate! I actually do have the Deadman anchor - thankfully haven't had to use it yet. I have a hi lift jjack which I've used as a pulley but the van I have right now is so darn heavy I really need a winch to do the job in sand. Thanks for the reminder :)
I understand your point - why buy a very expensive trailer and then cut back on the tow vehicle. We'd actually love to buy something cheaper and have looked but the Conqueror is unique. The problem is that I have chemical sensitivities and the conqueror has an all aluminum interior plus my...
That is an impressive truck - carrying a heavy load over rough terrain. That is quite a workout. ! Thanks for the tip about Rotella - I do use synthetic but had not heard about it.
Thanks Off Road Ranger -
Yes, GM has had lower gears - my van has 3.42 (and the 4.8L) - and has virtually no torque at low range. Thanks for the heads up about that. I love that 7.3L and am going back and forth between a higher mileage version of that and the 6.2L with lower miles.
Here's a...
I have never towed anything - let alone an 8000 lb (maxed out) trailer (Conqueror 19) on dirt roads.
I'm not worried about national forest roads - it's getting stuck in the desert I'm worried about. I've gotten stuck many times - but not with a big trailer :).
So the question is what is the...
Thanks so much. I'm going back and forth between a trailer or camper. I need something fairly large that has a shower/bath for my partner. Glad to hear that nice diesel could pull the trailer fine through all sorts of terrain. That helps.
If you don't mind my asking what didn't agree with...
I would love 2mpg. Whatever I go with - truck camper or rather big (Black series?) trailer, I imagine it will be more. Still, good to hear you kept it pretty low on the 1500...Fingers crossed.
I would love to hear more about this as well as how you destroyed the hardside (branches on the top or side?). I imagine those few inches don't make that much difference but would love to know. Also how much less tippy the popups have been?
I would go with the 350 or 3500 single rear wheel. Just a bit more expensive and you're pretty much assured that if you want a truck camper that's not too huge, you'll have the payload to handle it and will be able to get off road quite a bit as well.
Agreed. I've been looking for a heavy duty and have found used prices so high that I've concluded the most economical thing is to bite the bullet and buy new.
Sorry to see this was sold as we're considering one. Care to comment on what it's like getting this thing into backcountry and how far you went? I've never lugged a trailer behind me before - let alone one as capable (and heavy) as this one.
I have the same extended van with a limited slip and it's done well. I've gotten high-centered a few times and stuck many times but always managed to get out. It's been my favorite vehicle. Lots of great memories and at almost 200K it's still going strong. I don't know if the current Chevy's...
