I had two 3rd gen 4runners in my life, did some light wheeling while at college in Arizona. Very capable vehicles, but quite small for 2 people and not terribly comfortable on long road trips.
Always drooled over the Land Cruiser 80 - iconic styling, legendary reliability, solid front axle...
I've been thinking of doing a trip down to Alabama Hills this fall before they shut down highway 395. Or Highway 120.
Does anyone have any tips on best time to go, how many days it takes to do properly, things to do etc.?
I would be heading down from the SF Bay Area but we could easily meet...
will let you know! We are only doing a very small portion of Slick Rock to get to the camping spot by the creek. None of the stairs or any of that stuff.
I will be interested to walk down and see people tackle that stuff though.
Looking forward to this, guys! Couple of things:
1) Looks like it's going to be pretty chilly up there. High of 64 and lows in the 30s. Make sure you have warm sleeping gear and warm clothes.
2) Make sure you all have a fire permit if you intend to make a fire. You can get them for free...
Yes as far as I can tell, that's the good camp spot. I've personally never been, so I'm going off of verbal reports, photos, and google satellites. It's basically a 1/4 mile down the slick rock trail near the creek. Right before it starts getting really challenging.
PM me your cell number as I...
Nice!
I'm not sure if the invite went out, but I made a rally point so feel free to RSVP:

I think we're in, but I'm not sure we can leave work early enough on Friday to get there before dark. Would we be able to leave early Saturday and meet you guys and join for camping Saturday night?
It was great meeting you all! Shame we couldn't camp with everyone Friday night, but we had a blast regardless. Here are some of the pics that Alexis and I took:

I don't think I can head up on Friday, but planning to leave early Saturday and catch you guys before you leave Usal - then camp with everyone Saturday night. Will that work as long as I'm there before noon?
little update for anyone who's interested. Those of you who own FZJ80s probably know that the cooling system can be slightly temperamental
It started with my climb to prewitt ridge. My temp gauge started to nudge up above the half way mark on a slow climb. Let it cool down and eventually got up...
