Reporting in from Vancouver Island, Canada. Driving a new-to-me 2012 Range Rover Sport Supercharged in Fuji White. Stock except for Nitto Terra Grappler G2s (285/50R20).
Got the tires on today and went for a shakedown cruise. Did about 60km of active and deactivated logging roads in the pouring rain and fog. Now I'm waiting for the bash plate and sliders. Still need to pick a roof rack too.
Tires showed up, they're going on Saturday morning. I've done a few really minor tweaks: interior LEDs, stainless pedal covers, and removed the very weathered RANGE ROVER and SPORT badges from the tailgate while I wait for new ones.
Good point! I always forget somehow about the L494 haha...totally different vehicle. Green Oval Experience is starting to make armour for it and Voyager has an expedition roof rack but it’s early days for accessories yet.
I was shopping for an LR4, but I ended up with a 2012 RRS—the styling, road manners and supercharged V8 snookered me in. I think it'll be more fun on the road and just as much off it. A few differences:
RRS is shorter (wheelbase, length and height)
RRS has more road-oriented suspension and...
I admit it's pretty comfortable but not too different from a Discovery/LR4. Yesterday I ordered a skid plate, EAS compressor plate, and rock sliders from Green Oval Experience. I'm expecting to wait at least a month for that stuff.
Have any LR/RR peeps tried tapping into the EAS tank for airing...
I ordered tires (Nitto Terra Grappler G2 285/50R20, should be about 31.5") for the stock 20" wheels. Nittos are new to me, I had Cooper Zeon LTZs on the Evoque and they got crazy loud after about 20K. I'd like some input, but from what I've read going for > 32" tires on a Supercharged is a major...
Posting this here for reference: GravelTravel.ca has a detailed tour of the Trans Canada Adventure Trail, including the Vancouver Island section. Great info on where and when to expect logging trucks and where the good camping is north of Renfrew.
There won't be any snow at sea level, but if you're camping on the coast it can get cold with winter storms blowing in. It'll definitely rain, maybe every day.
Cell coverage is minimal on the west coast of the island. I recommend buying a copy of the Backroads Mapbook.
Echoing John, definitely...
Hi Tosh, I'm in Langford with a 2012 Range Rover Sport, just acquired. I've moved back after 11 years on the mainland—consider me "in recovery". Happy to help coordinate some island trips once my vehicle is dialed in.
After two years of stretching the limits of my little red Range Rover Evoque, I traded in for a 2012 Range Rover Sport Supercharged. Has everything I'd want except the factory locking rear diff (afaict very few were built with it).
The first owner has checked all the boxes on maintenance, so...
Picked up a rim and full sized spare for the Evoque. Just barely fits where the donut goes, apart from being 100mm wider than the donut! Need to cut some styrofoam or something to fit around it where the load floor used to be.
We're in Death Valley from the 10th-12th and the Racetrack is on our list. We'll camp at Panamint Springs Friday night. I'm new to the overlanding thing and never been to DV, so I'd love to tag along if you don't mind a greenhorn.
Regarding splitting the group, we're in a Range Rover Evoque...
Location: Vancouver, Canada
Rig: 2013 Range Rover Evoque

Hi everyone, I'm Luke in Vancouver. Driving an unlikely "rig": a 2013 Range Rover Evoque :grinning:, stock except for tires (Cooper Zeon LTZ). No real mods planned apart from a sump guard.
My experience is limited...
