Right on, I never really considered ditching the axle for a purpose built design. I needed to keep it as cheap as possible. It was a bonus that the old Courier axle had the Toyota lug pattern so I could match my wheels. Ha Ha :tearsofjoy:
It's hard to tell in my last picture but I'm actually only 90 degrees there and have about 4 more inches before I touch. You can basically jack knife the trailer as far past 90 as your stinger is long. That's just a bit of peace of mind and makes it much easier to back up solo. I know I can go...
That looks good to me, it gives you a bit more reach on the tongue. The way I made sure I could go past 90 degrees was measure from the ball hitch to the corner of the bumper and that distance is the length of my tongue forward of all supports.
I would shorten up that 40.94" measurement by something like half for turning clearance, other than that it looks good.
*Also, if you could shove your new steel into the pickup frame it would make a more secure connection. If your frame is like mine, I had a beefy outer C-channel the factory...
The reach on my trailer is 1/4" wall 2x2" tubing and it's not flexing under load or anything. I really wanted to be able to turn past 90 degrees, so I left that reach long enough to do just that. My Brother says I'm an idiot and if I've gone 90 degrees it's time to stop! lol I use that turn...
I have gobs of pictures of the fabrication and such if you want to know how I did anything, or what something's supposed to look like when you're putting it back together.
Mine was free! Ha Ha I have done this mod already and wouldn't mind sharing pics and notes. I've meant to make it a write-up but haven't had the time through the summer and fall. I reworked the tongue as it was cobbled together by some old farmer. I did an over-axle lift and that made plenty of...
I agree with avoiding DEF but I fully support getting a diesel. 5th wheels are heavy. Diesel gets the superior fuel mileage and range over similar capability gassers every time. For me I got tired of getting to the high mountain lake and having to buy their expensive gas, or bring my own in...
I'm guessing they shipped it that way so it would lay flatter in the packaging, or whoever is slapping them together at the factory was thinking about his/her hot date from the night before. :)
That style of mount is meant to fit between the hood and fender. So you'd pop the hood, screw the mount down to the fender so it sticks up through the gap when the hood is closed. It involves drilling but they are effective mounts, probably the most common style in my area.
*edit- Also the...
A lot of my trailering is off-road and a heavier tongue puts more weight on the drive tires really helping with traction when sidehill, or on loose and rough terrain, I don't mean rock-crawling as I have very little experience with that sort of trailering. If I'm road towing with a bunch of...
I looked up the weight differences and it looks like a 4BT is North of 700#s and the TDI is looking like it's lighter than the 3VZE (3.0, Gas, V6) that's in the 4Runner now.
I got turned onto the TDI when Nate joined the YouTube channel Bleepin Jeep. He's got a Jeep Wrangler on 40s with a Malone...
While I'm certainly not against the little Cummins I have seen where I can buy an entire car with everything I would need for less than the cost of the 4BT alone. Also Malone Tuning knows their way around the TDI and can really tailor it to your swap.
When I picked this rig up it was sort of on a whim, I had a choice between this and a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the V8. I didn't know anything about this particular era of 4Runner, but it was a Toyota. That means something right? I'm not so sure, Ha Ha. I will always look back on that choice...
I'm 37 the Wife tells me and I can definitely see the merit in eliminating the ladder from the equation. You definitely have an eye for detail, thanks for sharing the build.
I could have clarified I suppose. I wouldn't be going out in someone els's back yard and removing anything. I didn't do it in Afghanistan where the stacked rocks indicated the path through a minefield, etc. No, I knew this was simply the work of someone extremely bored because I watched them...
Yes sir, that's the way i look at it too. We're way past any implied warranty period so modifications are going to happen. I have a set of the 2015 Trail wheels that I think will look classy with the Calvary Blue color. I plan to build my own bumpers and roof rack because I see that ARB front...
