I have a couple of the baofeng radios they are ok but they are not the quality of my icom or yaesu hand held radios. They cost a lot more but you get what you pay for. Still over rough terrain nothing will beat a good radio that can put out 50 watts.

Wool blankets! I never slept in a rooftop tent but I have spent many nights in a truck sleeper where you can’t run the truck to stay warm. I use wool blankets from army surplus and a good cold wether sleeping bag.
Try getting gas from a different place. My taco will guzzle the gas from one place. And do good on gas from another.
Also try higher or lower octane. Other than that keep an eye on tire pressure and air filter.
I always liked running hf mobile when I drove long haul. I always wanted a screw driver antenna just never pulled the trigger on one. Tar Heel seams to be one of the better ones and I was not impressed with reviews on the yaesu screwdriver antenna even though the 857d has a controller for it all...
857d is a fantastic rig. I had one that burned up in my semi truck. they have a lot of gizmo on them and once you have it figured out you will be very pleased with it
