It's currently out, can always come back but thankfully there was a lot of bi-partisan opposition.

Yeah, unfortunately any time you head out west these days you have to include checking recent fire reports and if a trail has washed out after a recent fire.
I did the NMBDR the last week of August 2024, of course it crisscrosses the CDT several times, and I've spent time in NM on some of the other areas too, so looking forward to this.
I've put it on my calendar but right now I don't think I'll be able to make it. I have something Friday that will probably run late so will want to sleep in Saturday but if things change I'll be there.
I saw a YT video about it and a couple of news stories about it, but to me, it's vaporware until they are rolling down the street. How do they drive? How do the plastic panels do when it's 100F degrees out? How about when it's 0F degrees? How much will it cost when you add in some basics like...
Probably not. Check the MVUM maps (free online) for any given National Forest to know where you can camp, but usually if you see an big open space like that it's been logged and is either private land or currently being leased to someone like Weyerhaeuser. I could be wrong, but check the MVUM...
If I'm up past 1:30AM shooting pics, I won't make it to work by 7:30AM, so would need Friday off to sleep in. I'm like 80% planning on going. Besides, depending on weather, might bring my kayak and do a little paddling on Friday.
About five and a half days. Our group did the whole route, I personally didn't do Ophir Pass (long story). We were doing north to south so that was at the end of the trip. How much time have you spent in New Mexico? If you haven't spent much then do that instead!
So far I've done New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. I love New Mexico and travel there often (I live in Oklahoma) so while I enjoyed that BDR, it didn't cover much new territory for me. Wyoming was pretty good but had long sections not as interesting. Which leads me to Colorado. Again, I have...
Changed that up, I have decided to spend the two days at Snow Canyon SP instead and explore some of the lava tubes, etc. I've been to Valley of Fire SP before and it's pretty nice but figured it would be too similar to what we're driving through. My plan now is to meet the group at Gold Butte...
I'm not in charge of anything related to this, but 100% of the trips I've been on, which is a lot, I have NEVER seen everyone show up who signed up 3+ months in advance. I'm betting you'll be able to go when someone inevitably drops.
Just signed up. Got a little taste of this area a few years ago and have been wanting to go back, unfortunately rain was an issue and we had to turn back early. The clay out there is super slick when wet, put one of the tacos into a ditch.
