It's been longer than I expected between updates, but life happens whether we like it or not. This weekend I started the rather tedious process of making new brake lines. I'd initially planned to just reuse the "stock" lines, but some checking of the ones that were in it revealed that they were...
I'll be doing discs at some point in the future, but the stock 11" drums are actually plenty for the Wagon, even with an SBC. I recently got the chance to drive one with a decently built 327 and stock brakes, as opposed to my much less exciting 305. I should be fine with drums for a while, at...
Got some more work done on the Wagon. First, I switched tactics completely on the clutch throwout. As I started into it, I was having nothing but trouble trying to get all the measurements aligned for the pivot, the arm, the throwout, the slave cylinder and so on. I did some more research into...
As promised, I did indeed get some more done today. The first thing was replacing the fuel tank, and my instinct to do that rather than deal with the stock tank was 10000000% justified when I dropped the stock tank and found it about half full of literal rats' nest. Definitely worth replacing...
I took a little time to tinker tonight, and got a bit done. I can now say that I have all the lights required for it to be legal now, which is a nice feeling. Between doing the 12v conversion and adding turn signals there was a little work that needed done. All of the bulbs needed replaced, of...
Thanks! I definitely have an appreciation for the old Land Rovers. I am personally very brand agnostic, but my wallet is not, unfortunately, or I'd potentially have gotten a Defender 110 or Series 3. Something I'm considering down the road is using Disco 1 or 2 axles to upgrade with, though...
I didn't think it was going to happen either, given the difficulty of the project, cost of the Wagon itself, and overall cost of the project, but I decided to just jump both feet in this year on it, and we'll see how it plays out. Entirely possible I'm in over my head and I don't know it yet...
A Wagon build has been on my dream list for a while, and a reenlistment bonus this year brought it into reach finally. It's been a lot of fun so far building it, so hopefully it's just as fun to drive when it's done.
I don't intend to stop, if anything I need to get moving faster. I've given myself a pretty tight deadline and I still have a lot of work left, lol. It's entirely possible that I'm overestimating my skills/ability to get it done by the end of May, but I'm going to continue operatiing like I'm...
I've had a fair number of project rigs, ranging from Jeeps to Land Cruisers and 4Runners, but there's been one in particular that I've wanted for a long time and was only recently able to get one of my own: a Willys Wagon. As the post title implies, I was finally able to get one! The one I...
I got her out off road, which was a lot of fun! I think that the suspension and tires will need to happen before I do the transmission swap, though. It was a lot of fun, even as is, though, so I'm pretty happy about it.
After having spent lots of time and more money than I should have on initially cheap, but later expensive FJ60s that turned out to have garbage frames, I decided to put enough money down to get a 60 series that was actually decent. The result of that is my newest addition, a 1988 FJ62 that is in...
I've done just a little bit of work on the FJ60. I replaced the rear axle tube, which has solved my brake fluid leak issue, and I've replaced the tires. I went with 285/75r16 General Grabber X3s. I've had the X3s on several rigs, and really liked how they've performed, and their price tag is...
All right, so I've made some progress on the FJ40. I pulled the spark plugs and put some ATF down the cylinders to soak for a few days. Miraculously, after putting her in 3rd (and making sure the t-case was in gear), the engine turned over with no fuss. So there's actually hope of the 1F being...
Funnily enough, for the manual point, the seller actually had one of the original Haynes manuals from the time period that he gave me. Also, I've got the factory service manuals, too, which is a big help. Hopefully I'm set on tools, but we'll find out soon enough on that.
Well, it finally happened, I found an FJ40 in decent overall condition that I could actually afford! It's a 1970 in Capri Blue, and she needs a decent amount of work. It hasn't even been registered since April of 1995, so that gives you a decent idea of what we're working with here. The hard top...
I went out and did a full walk through today. It's a decent start to a great Land Cruiser, I think. The body and mechanical stuff are in good shape, and it definitely has better bones than the 81 I had, so I'm pretty pleased with it.
