Yes - that is very much my experience. Having my 2 meter/70 cm mount on my tailgate (the only place where it is protected from damage from tree limbs and the like) provides shockingly good signal in some directions, and moderately good in other directions. When trying to get into a repeater...
6'4" and 250 means that the XJ is probably not going to be a great choice. A Grand Cherokee will probably work better for you....and it probably already has a roof rack on it.
The Grand Cherokees have pretty good support from the aftermarket when it comes to relatively mild mods...and a 2"...

Despite what Comet's marketing people would have you believe, they cannot circumvent physics....any 2 meter antenna will be responsive to very good (or very bad) ground plane. I have a Wrangler, and I find that a very stout stainless L bracket mounts on the tailgate gives me moderately good...
