Can confirm. I just took a trip with my 2016 Tacoma on 34’s and a lot of armor. I had to drive up I-5 with a headwind, staying mostly in the right lane except to pass trucks… I got 12.6 mpg (corrected for tire size difference). With $6.50 gas right now it hurt my soul. As soon as you load these...
Yeah, the shell seems like a great option.
If I do shell + drawers I'll probably be about 400-500lbs (~10%) over GVWR fully loaded though. I have BP-51's and can do heavy leafs/ regear, I've never had such a heavy truck though. What do you all think about that much added weight? Will it really...
Yeah, I've seen some guys rock the soft topper like that. I like the storage of the Leitner though so it kinda takes that away, plus then I'm adding more weight to get it covered without the security, might as well just get a shell at that point haha.
I love a lot of aspects of the shell too...
I do more 2-3 day overlandy type stuff, but in Northern CA the trails can get rocky quick, so I do end up scraping my bottom pretty often.
I had a hybrid bumper but have an aluminum CBI T3 bumper on order, so my armor will be:
CBI front (70lbs)
Winch (~70lbs)
Full steel skids (130lbs)...
Hey guys, I'm hoping for some opinions on going with either a Shell + RTT or the Leitner bed rack + RTT. I don't think a normal bed rack is right for me, because I do want the extra storage and organization capabilities of the Leitner. Both options I'd like to put on a RTT, I have a 5ft bed...
Hey guys. I’ve owned a 2016 taco for a few years, finally got it all decked it out with armor, tires, etc. I had full BP-51 setup on it and loved it. Loved off roading it and actually took it on some pretty rough stuff. I had all steel armor below, slid down rocks, got a little flexy with a tire...

Getting an issue trying to post images. It’s happened twice now, once a ~1.4mb photo, once a ~200kb photo. It shows up as a stock blue photo icon with a closed lock in the bottom right. If I click on it, it says “No Permission Sorry, you don’t have permission to view this attachment.”

I’m with Michael, you’ll probably? have to do a CMC with 33’s. I have 275/70/17 with a 2” Bilstein 5100 lift. I did NOT have to do a CMC, because my tires actually rub on the front instead of the cab mount. It has something to do with the alignment and my tires sit just a hair more forward. (You...
If you’re looking at the 3rd gens, I recommend the TRD Off-road if you looking for what’s most suitable for *off-road* kinda overlanding. The others are great, but the OEM rear locker is so nice to have, and the crawl control is just that something extra that you can totally live without but...
Frontrunner has a telescoping awning mount. Best bet with that might be to attach to the roof, then extend backwards towards your bed to give you the correct location so the 270 works properly...
If you wanna do a little bit of DIY, I used four or five pipe straps that I lined with felt padding, then bent them to line up with the ARB awning mount rails. I also lined the places where the awning might rub on the rack. The picture is off my Subaru (which I no longer have) but it held up...
I highly recommend the MyMedic MyFAK in the *advanced* version. It’s $200 so it’s not cheap, but it’s awesome. I’ve supplemented it with an extra CAT tourniquet (they give you a RATS), but I also want one in arms reach easily accessible if I get in a bad accident and am stuck in the drivers...
Just to add to the pile... huge fan of my RAT 3 knife (basically the same as the ESEE 3, even from the same company), NOT serrated. I keep a little pen-sized sharpener in my kit and the straight blade is super easy to sharpen.
10/10 would recommend the ESEE/RAT 3 with no serrations.
I’ll...
I’m using the Boulder Tools rapid tire deflator. Easy to use, a little less expensive than the ARB, and came with new valve cores.
I think this is one of those items that you don’t want to notice, I just use it, put it away, done. Which means it works perfectly haha.
@Cpol How do you like it? Do you feel like it’s added protection/given you extra peace of mind? Do you ever find yourself wanting a full bumper or are you glad you went with the slimline? I’m looking to eventually do the CBI rear with swing arm as well, looks like you have a sweet setup!
