I really don't ever operate 160. My antenna is the Tarheal Little II 80-6m . I have made some great contacts HF mobile. Yeah my 2m/70cm is the FT-8800.
CQ is definitely not outdated we use it on HF all the time. But also make sure your radio has the right offset programmed. either negative or positive. You should hear the Repeater beep or "curchuck " when you stop transmitting. If you don't you might not be actually keying the repeater. Also...
Hey are you using a local Repeater? Have you researched any local Ham clubs? And have you tried calling CQ CQ CQ (Your call sign) most clubs have a weekly net on a Repeater around 8 pm local time. Also where are you located I can try and help.

So an update, I make several "DX" (outside of the USA) contacts every day too and from work or on lunch. This antenna is a work horse! 3 of us in the local the club have tarheal antennas. Between the Little Tarheal II & Tarheal 75a. I wouldn't choose anything else when it comes to HF MOBILE ...
I might be able to make it but I'm pretty short on gas funds till the 15th it's an hour and 45 min away for me.(77miles) diesel is expensive. If I would have known about a week or two ago I probably could have made it. A little short notice. Maybe next time.
It's just fun thing (Amateur Radio) I use it outlanding when I don't have repeater's and out of VHF/UHF range. I can Also talk back home to the wife when no cell range or to someone else if I need help or an emergency.
Look at the Larson NMO150BK (VHF) ,but they make a dual band one too ... It flexes easy and I have used to for about 10 years now and now issues and great signal reports.
I have it, de KB1KBT. Don't use it much. But now that I just recently installed HF in the mobile. I plan on using it more. Definitely a great idea for overlanding!
Got my Wildpeak AT3W's put on last week! Man these look great... No off road test yet. But handle great in the heavy rain last week.
I went from 30x10.5x15 BFG AT2'S to 32x11.5x15 AT3W's . So happy with these tires!
