South of Chama there are numerous forest roads to explore off of HW84. Google “Trout Lakes” for a cool little fishing spot. But like 505 Overland said, snow might be an issue with any northern NM high elevation forest road. Have fun!
Take a short drive northeast from Santa Fe to the Pecos Wilderness. I don’t know if any specific trails in the area but it’s a beautiful area.
The Jemez mountains are to the west of Santa Fe and it’s a popular area for outdoor enthusiasts.
Honestly there are several other spots in the area...
So did anyone attend this recent trip? Pics? Sorry I couldn’t make it. My truck has been acting up a bit and I don’t trust it right now on a longer drive.
My folks live in Farmington and I’m in that area often.
If we can get enough folks to express interest we can discuss place and day. I was thinking some of the forest roads south of Chama or forest road 144 from Espanola to the Fenton Lake area.
I’m definitely the same while camping. Far away from others as possible. The camping spots there are spread out and basically identified by fire pits. Camping there in the dead of summer is a perfect getaway from the heat of the city.
The fishing is great up to a year or two after it’s stocked. It was stocked last year I believe and about a month ago. This past trip my 2 buddies and I caught aroind 30 fish between the 3 of us. Problem is it’s heavily fished and people will keep all the fish they catch. I wanna go back up once...
I can’t think of any particular roads, but there are a lot of forest roads in that immediate area you could explore. Red River isn’t too far away and there are some fun trails that start in town. Check out Greenie Peak and Goose Lake.
