I'm very pleased with my Cooper ST MAXX. First winter in several years without proper winter tires and these have been great so far in pizza cutter size 255/85r16.
I ran the same size KM2 a few years back and they were fantastic in mud but not nearly as good in winter.
I have a large RTT on the roof but for a few reasons I am building a small trailer and will move the RTT onto it. For your info, the primary reasons for this
1) being able to set up camp for an extended period and not having to break camp to drive anywhere
2) At 6'2" I still have to climb up...
Not to knock your preparations, but are you planning a feast if you get stuck?? Do you really expect your wife to go light up a pellet stove and cook a meal if she gets stranded alone??
Blankets, flashlight, shovel, proper winter clothing, a fat candle, lighter and a few protein bars and water...
Also, we use our furry buddy heater when its cold!
As has been said dry wool or synthetic clothing is essential, as is a warm, dry touque. If you have lighter, summer sleeping bags consider doubling them up and shoving winter bags inside of the summer bags. The outer bag will actually protect...
In my experience the fabric doesn't breath well like poly-cotton canvas does and I like keeping a window vented by my face. That said there is a LOT of air in the XL and it does have a small vent on each side so probably not necessary, but I like to.
It will definitely be heavy but that doesn't have to be a show stopper. What are you pulling with (driving) and where are you going to want to take it?
I'm going to be building a trailer soon. It's not as sturdy as I would have liked but I couldn't buy the material to build one for the price...
We have a RTT on the roof. I'm starting to build a trailer for it. If it doesn't work out I'll probably buy cots for our ground tent...
RTT is a cool idea and sure has some big advantages but being up on our roof just isn't working for us.
Are you going 4 wheeling or exploring and overlanding/camping? I've wanted bumpers, sliders and a winch on every one of my vehicles but never had them on any. If you're building a rock buggy/trail rig then go nuts but if you are realistic with your expectations you will realize what you do and...
Hey everyone,
I'm heading out next weekend (July 20-23) to the Radium/Invermere area to do some exploring and camping. I know it's a bit out of the way but I told my kid we'd go to the hotsprings out there (Free, natural ones). If anyone is interested I made a rally point event you can check out.
It's funny, this post had me all caught up in my thoughts about our RTT and what I do and don't like about our current set up and then my wife tells me she wants to go to the beach with our daughter and camp a night or two with her while I'm away at work. She's too short to set up and pack down...
Plan is travel and camp in a new spot each night. I've been out to the hot springs via the main road by Canal Flats and camped off that road a ton, so I just want to explore this route.
Am I trying out my truck? No... I might have misunderstood your question.

I think it really depends on what you are coming from, not everyone "upgrades" from a ground tent to a RTT. We used to ground tent (backpacking and car camping) and decided a few years ago with a crying baby, in the rain, on a leaking mattress that we wanted an upgrade. We decided if we were...
It is due to change in air temperature, not the actual metal expanding and contracting. As the air heats up the internal pressure is released through the breather. When it cools the vacuum is relieved by air returning into the breather. The problem is when the breather is under water it sucks...
