    Travel to Utah

Hmm, it seems I answered this somewhere before- there just aren’t many crowds anywhere near Moab in the summer. It’s just way too hot. We go, sometimes twice a year. One year we tried early September, temps were in the triple digits in Devils Kitchen in the Needles District. After only two...

Is the Overlanding community killing itself

Is the Overlanding community killing itself

Ye Yes, the topic and a multitude of tangents have been discussed, debated & resolved. If you aren’t driving a MOG, a Series III RR or a 40 series LC , then you aren’t really an overlander and have been relegated to the status of Mall Krawler .

Is the Overlanding community killing itself

Somewhere there is a thread about all of that and I became long winded on the subject of YouTube posers and IG flunkies and why I no longer participate in any of that drama.

Is the Overlanding community killing itself

This is true, I’ve never hung with the Tacoma crowd. In the tri county area I live in there are JKs and even TJs everywhere. Huge following. Not many Tacos and way less Cruiser guys. We are a very small cult with a lot more in common than our Landcruisers.

Is the Overlanding community killing itself

Ya, I followed them for the very first series they did- Moab to Valley of the Gods, then unsubscribed. Way too much drama. Way over equipped, way too much add placement. I really like this guy, no drama, no BS, just does his thing and tells us about it. Dan Greck is one of three that...

Is the Overlanding community killing itself

Something I have noticed coming from both the jeep world and the Landcruiser world. At get togethers the jeep guys would stand around for hours talking about all of their gear and vehicle mods and bolt ones. Cruiser guys? Talk about experiences and very rarely talk about our trucks when we get...

It’s been my experience that if you go in the summer- it’s going to be extremely hot- there won’t be any crowds anywhere, maybe in town, but even then, it’s going to be extremely hot. We go at least annually. One time we went in early Sept. The temps in Devils Kitchen were triple digit...

Optima Blue Top Long Term? Review

Yup, back before Johnson Controls bought them out they were great batteries.

    Sudden revelation

I’m with you- started doing this thing back in mid 70s using a 66 VW bug. No tent, just a bed roll, a Coleman stove and a cheap cooler. Had lots of Ford pickups, my favorite being a ‘60F100 2wd. Did a lot of desert running in that thing. Then bought a 76’ Landcruiser. Ex crashed it, moved...

Optima Blue Top Long Term? Review

I haven’t been too scientific about this, I do know the battery has never been discharged below 12 volts which is 50% discharged. It has been used as a house battery in my dual battery set up. When parked at home I have a smart charger keeping both batteries topped off. My solar charger is...

    Never Get Lost

So, we’re headed north this summer, way north, as far as one can drive north. We have paper maps, two compasses, a guide book and a PLB. The phone will be useless. Good to go

/what electronics are needed to start?

Hmmm, I have paper maps, a couple of compasses, and an Iphone that gets shut off once we are off grid. I ditched the CB radio as it was an old dinosaur that took up valuable space. The GMRS was moved to the CBs old spot. We also carry a PLB and will be carrying a-la-cart health and...

    Shower Water heater recommendations

We used water bags in the past. Well, sort of used them. Since we often find ourselves camped out in cold weather they never really warmed up, so we were very rarely able to use it. It’s up in my barn now. Hanging from a post, looking all innocent, harmless, and somewhat useless in temps any...

    Help, I have Jeep envy

I refuse to grow up, BTW not even my old jeep rubicon could have traversed that ledge. Why did I sell the rubicon 11 years ago? It is not, and could never be an “overlanding truck”, not even close. It wasn’t designed that way. As far as that photo? He made a mistake , as we all sometimes do...

    Help, I have Jeep envy

My brother in law loves his Chevy, so much so that he has gone wild with modifications. 2 inch lift and aftermarket arms up front and a pair of “heavy” old man emu leafs in the rear. It is an impressive sleeper rig and will go just about anywhere my 80 series can go. Except, as he learned...

    Shower Water heater recommendations

So, I guess I should be happy with 5 years, call it done and replace with the same. After a lot of research that’s what I’ve done. As all of the upright models are manufactured the same way there is no variance in quality. . Hang it, quick connect the water lines, spin on the propane line- get...

Rookie trying to get in the game

My personal preference would be the 60 series. Yup, it has an underpowered engine, but who’s in a hurry. It also has a solid front axle. It will be a lot easier to wrench on and a lot easier to modify to your liking. It’s also way up there on the cool factor. And, the 60 will increase in value...

Defeated? Or just part of the journey?

Not a failure at all. You had a great time exploring a great state nestled in the Appalachian mountains. You had a learning experience. Lessons? You know what those are, you’ve outlined them. We take really long trips two & three times a year, before each trip not only do I thoroughly...
