There are some dirt roads around Hwy 1 N of Santa Cruz that you could drive on. I would be careful going to far off pavement up here in the SC mountains though..... growers do not take kindly to folks showing up near their operations! Besides, with all the rain we have been getting the paved...
BLM land might be your best bet although there really isn't anything right in the Bay Area....
Cow Mountain between Ukiah and Clear Lake comes to mind. There are also some area's east of Clear Lake.
One other small off road park to consider is Frank Raines OHV near Patterson off Hwy 5.
Thanks for the report and pic's. I am heading to Utah in late May for Gone Moab but plan on exploring a little before the event.
This info helps me with some idea's for my route.
On my previous rig, a Nissan Frontier, I only went up to 265/75-16s from 265/70-16s and ran a lot of difficult trails. On my X, I have less lift but was able to fit 285s with a little melt mod on the fender liner combined with a small modification to the metal behind it. My current lift is only...
I was just making a point.... I was not yelling at anyone or posturing. There was so much misinformation being spread around the country that I just wanted to clarify the situation. I also apologize if I hurt anyone's feeelings....
If you look at this article...
Glad to see you got that reattached. The damage is barely noticeable now.
I've been looking at the hole I punched in my bumper cover for about 10 months now but my new bumper is supposed to get delivered wed.

OK folks..... let me be perfectly clear about this - IT IS NOT THE DAM FAILING, IT IS THE AUXILIARY SPILLWAY!
This is still a very serious emergency and they are letting water out of the lake using the regular spillway that has a large hole in it (you may have seen this on the news). The...
For an overlanding rig, the 4 Runner is a better choice. You can sleep in it if you want and it can carry more gear securely as well. While there is a huge aftermarket network for the Jeep, it is nearly as big for the 4 Runner. Also, starting with a completely stock rig allows you to build it...
There are 2 campgrounds in the Upper Ranch, which is the 4X4 area. The Obstacle Course camp and Sycamore Camp. Sycamore is less exposed to wind and has FREE hot showers! While there are rumors that prices are going up, currently it only costs $10 per night and includes the normal $5 a day trail...
All great suggestions! I'll add check the lug nuts and air pressure in all 5 tires. Tighten down all hardware for skid plates, sliders and suspension. Visually check both differentials, transfer case, transmission and engine for any leaks far enough ahead of time that you can complete any repairs.
