well, a die has been cast. it will be a utility trailer with a canoe/kayak rack. this afternoon I cut all the extension off the sides. the fenders will be external. the steel I removed was cut up into 18" pieces to be used for the sides of the trailer.
I shortened the trailer by 18" and...
Thanks! I was ready to order a trailer axle kit from Ebay......Axle, shackles, springs, hubs and fenders for $360......Would have needed another $200 in steel to get to this point!
The fellow I bought it from had a number of trailers in the yard. All in the same condition, but all much larger...
Hubs and bearings are perfect....Tires and wheels, not so much.
I ordered a brand new set of 15" wheels and tires from AMAZON. Along with a couple steel fenders and an LED light kit.
Totally stripped the chassis of everything that will not be needed no matter what i decide to do with it.
I needed a project to keep me busy during these strange times
Wandering around FaceBook MasrketPlace, I spotted this nasty looking trailer frame for $200. And it was about 5 miles away. During a pouring rain storm I went and picked it up. Didn't even give it a once over....raining too...
I have a couple of questions
1. Does the intake/exhaust normally run along the bottom? It can run straight down, or to the sides. With the extensions O put on the feet, ot can run out of the end and it is more convienient for portable use.
2. Are you worried about melting the solder on your...
Had some time today to "Farkle" the Chinese Diesel Heater today........

RoyB from SE Massachusetts. Have a house in Hawthorne NJ where my wife works. I’m retired. Interested in dispersed camping. 2018 RAM 2500 with RTT trailer. Weekday travel preferred. Guidance helpful.
BTW...Did we hijack this thread? I hope the OP doesn't mind.....
I use nothing but OPTIMATE battery chargers for near everything with a battery.
My 2007 Suzuki motorcycle has the original battery! Still fine. I just sold a 2001 Moto Guzzi that had't been run since 2002. Been on an Optimate all...
Thank you....learning every day!
In my truck I ran 2awg from the front for both the RENOGY 40A DC to DC charger and I also use a 6500# winch on the rear tow receiver at times. 2awg is a bit light for the winch but I've been using it to haul logs, load implements onto a flatbed trailer and other...
OK, I'm totally baffled....I did some checking on my truck...2018 RAM 2500 with snowprep and tow package. This gives me a 220a alternator and a trailer brake controller with 7 pin trailer plug. A bit of research and I'm finding that pin #4, using a 10g factory installed wire, has a 30A fuse at...
Jason, what size wire do you have going to pin #4 to see 30A charging. I've measured lots of factory wiring harnesses and never seen close to that much current. Maximum I've recorded is about 7 amps. And that was a rather short run from vehicle alternator to 7 pin plug. What truck do you have...
At the end of WWII, hundreds of acres of closely parked jeeps in Okinawa junkyard.
Since they would depress the auto industry if sold, they were all bulldozed into the sea. Trucks too. Thousands and thousands of them.
And trailers too!
I don't need no stink'n HiLift jack!
If only!!!!!
Sewed up a cover for the 5# propane tank out of some material I had left over from a boat project
Found a place to store the wheel chocks
Installed a piece of PVC tube to store awning poles, diesel heater duct and diesel heater exhaust pipe. Also a couple straps for the camp rug
And...
Independent, torsion type axles are nearly universally used on horse trailers because of a much smoother ride on the horses legs. There are videos showing this somewhere. Many torsion axle trailers , even with rubber springs, have thousands upon thousands of miles with no issues.
My next...
Using an inverter to convert DC to AC so you can power an AC charger is quite inefficient. The GR31 battery is not true deep cycle. Unless the tow vehicle is running, AND the alternator can keep up with the needs of an inverter, the GR31 battery will have decreased life.
The absolute best...
I'm not concerned about MPG while overlanding....But ya gotta get there first. Up here in New England the OL opportunities are far a few. I need to travel to PA or VA for anything even approaching OLing. And Nm and AZ are where I spend the winters......
Hubs are fine. After 100 miles at 45 degree weather, hubs were still cold and the tires road surface area was barely warm. No friction there.
I'm totally convinced it is all about wind resistance......We shall see
