HK, thanks for the tip with the mic holder. I have a clip style in my JK that has worked ok over the years, but I like this option so much better. Order just placed for one.
I actually have it mounted to my hi lift jack and not directly on the hard top. My understanding of how the metal plate works is all you need is a plate about that big to reflect the signal up to the antenna. I don't think grounding it would add anything to the db as it's more of a reflector...
Looks like a great trip! We've been there many times, but never this time of year. It's the best when you can be there with no one else around. Glad you and your girls got to experience it that way.
We tried coming into the camp area early one season when there was still some snow patches...
Mounted propane tank externally
Installed Vector Off-Road E-Dock and placed mounts for Phone, GMRS radio, Nexus 7 tablet, and Spot tracker.
Reset my Staun tire deflators to 22 PSI.
Mounted ARB rear awning
Made new antenna mounting bracket to accommodate new rear awning
Nice day of messing...
I am curious to see what others have done as well. I am looking at putting the fridge in back but am leaning towards a drawer system as the base. Subbed.
I have the 857D and have grown to love it. It's a great radio out of the box, but as a new HAM, it was a bit daunting to learn all of the features. I got on 2m fine and set up repeaters easily, it was just tough to remember what the menu setting was to raise transmit power or scan the band for...
Stumbled across this table that drops in over your tire and thought it was a pretty good piece of kit to have. Did a search here and didn't see it discussed anywhere, so I thought I would ask if anyone had any experience with it. I think it's pretty new to the scene (maybe a year or so). A bit...
I've been using one for about a year now. It holds my Verizon MiFi device. Overall, I'd say we are happy with it. Agree, it works better stationary vs. on the move. Takeaways that I have learned so far. Bars on your device are pretty inaccurate. Put your device in a mode that will show dB...
I have a good assortment of first aid kits accessible in the rig (small to large). But knowing how to use them past the simple scrapes and cuts is where many get a little nervous (myself included). I have had military first responder training about 1oo years ago it seems. That covered...
I think that most of the folks that signed up to be part of this community share the same philosophy on the outdoors in general. I think we all have it to be good stewards of the areas we travel. It really is a bummer for me to come up on a site where someone has camped and left it a mess...
We have the AEV Rhino Rack (not the same mounting style as your) with similar clearance issues. Getting the tent on there is completely doable, but it did present some challenges. We overcame them all but one of them that caused me a lot of frustration was getting my arm deep enough under the...
Good idea, thanks for sharing. I have been using the camco water bandit with a small section of regular hose for a while, but your idea looks more compact/flexible.
My 2 cents... once you get your Technician, keep pushing to secure that General. You are already in that study mode and the material builds of off what you just learned.
I got into HAM basically as a back up comm option while off the grid. It's great to be able to connect with someone in your...
