You'll need a rooftop antenna for your Ham signal to propagate beyond your truck's cab (this applies to ScorpioVI as well). Rooftops are mostly magnetic-mounts, and the coax can be snaked into your cab via an open window. Start with the Baofeng, and upgrade later.

That's a good number of rigs, awesome! We can all air down when we get to a clearing at the start of Bixby. Will anyone be CB-equipped? It'd be nice to have at least two rigs with comm (little/no cell signal on the trail). I'll have both Ham and CB.

Congrats on your attempt on a Ham license soon! I studied for about a week, and passed the Technician test without too much trouble. I have both a mobile unit in my truck as well as a Baofeng HandiTalk (HT) for when I'm outside of the vehicle. Hams definitely beat anything else out there for...

I've driven this road quite a few times, and you don't need a lift for it - I've seen a 2WD Ford Mustang go through it with not too much trouble. There may be some water puddles around in the low-lying areas after rains, but it's typically a dry trail with excellent views! What day are you...

Newbie wants to try OBDR Route #3 - Tips?

Great video there, CJAO! It really helped me get a sense of the type of roads/terrains encountered on Rt. 6... except I'll be going the opposite way toward Hauser. How many miles would you say was Rt. 6, assuming that you were able to follow the prescribed route the entire way - for...

Newbie wants to try OBDR Route #3 - Tips?

I'm coming up from California, and plan on running northbound on Route 3, and cutting over to the ocean via Route 6, then head home along the coast - I'm hoping to make the run in mid to late-July with my son and perhaps a friend (and his son). I'll be purchasing the Rts. 3 and 6 maps from the...
