......and I'll say it again.
Choose a far off destination, plan a route ( which could change at a moments notice) , stop and camp at your convenience ....repeat until destination is reached.
Plan a return route or next destination ( which you should have done way before now) ....blah, blah...
Nothing, nothing on my van at all. however:-
I did buy my wife a 20 year old VW T4 ( eurovan) 8 seat bus .....been cutting/grinding and welding in new metal for the past 4 days.
One previous owner .....I think he used it as a submarine.
rubber wheel arch flares, no paint left on the edges of my wheel arches yet again.
I've recently bought a 1997 vw passat 1.9L TDI as a donor car. Engine is AFN code, which is the strongest TDI engine VW ever made according to popular opinion in the VW T3 circles.
Gonna install that in my van...
rock crawling during an overland expedition should be that very last thing on your list and if possible, (which it usually is) avoided.
Choose the other route, there always is one.
Damaging your vehicle 1000 miles away from anywhere is never a good idea.
So yeah, stock vehicle, good tyres and...
for every pound of propane burned you get one pound of water vapour, if you are burning propane in your tent you are gonna get everything damp.
buy a chinese diesel air heater, or planar, or webasto or eberspacher or mikuni .....just warm air folks.
Diesel heaters are NOT a new vanlife...
Thats done it. I'm out of this overlanding malarkey.
NOBODY is sticking anything to my carpet lined and insulated ceiling.
I shall just go back to choosing a far off destination and pitch up camp in several places along the way.
16" wheels, BFG AT's all round, 2" brickwerks lift kit + spax gas adjustable shocks. 40% LSD in transmission and granddaddy low on first gear.
PS. winch to make a washing line for the wife....never needed to use it
Great discussion provoking question Mike.
I have 2 hang down tents for my ARB 2500x2500 awning.
Both are used depending upon how many folks are with me, what the terrain/season/weather is likely to be.
neither take much room to stow, so I take both with me.
even though I'm now a gnarly old bastard ex royal marine, I do like my comforts these days.
Gone are the grin and bear it days, I wanna be warm when it's cold outside.
Those boot warmers look an option I would consider if my diesel air heater, 3 amp/h 240v electric blankets, van heater ever...
There are times when I could use a trailer, but that's just to free up space in the van rather than pack the van every time I move just to unpack it again when I get somewhere else.
All in the name of a fold down bed.
