Armor, armor and more armor is your friend, they are relatively "low clearance" from factory, shock skids would be a great idea as the rear shock mounts are the lowest point
The Colorado/Canyon is a great platform, very capable. My Canyon hasnt let me down.

Armor and recovery equipment should be first, lifts and bigger tires are certainly nice but you need to protect your investment first and foremost. And going out on the trail without recovery equipment not the best idea.
